Southland Tales Trailer Update + Kelly's Darko Entertainment
September 17, 2007

We stated in an article on August 23rd that the trailer for Southland Tales was supposed to arrive sometime in the first week of September. Unfortunately that's come and gone and now I feel like we left all of you high and dry. However, I checked earlier today with Richard Kelly himself and he confirms that Sony will instead release the trailer this week - more details are below. News also hit today about the launch of Richard Kelly's Darko Entertainment production company which will be kicking off with a feature film titled Dirty Girl.
Southland Tales Trailer
Via both a personal confirmation with Richard himself as well as on his public MySpace blog, Richard confirms that this will be the actual week Sony releases the trailer.
I am told by Sony/Goldwyn that it will be released this week in a very big way. Sorry for the delays… and I pray to God that no puppies have been harmed.
Nope, no puppies were harmed over here Richard. How about everyone else? Did any puppies get harmed in the mayhem over the delay? (Hopefully not…)
Darko Entertainment
Announced today is the formation of a new production company helmed by Richard Kelly, producing partner Sean McKittrick, and financier Ted Hamm. The best news is their focus is to "back modestly budgeted, director-driven films." Finally someone in Hollywood has realized how some real cinematic gems are created - and it's not with inflated budgets or studio control!
The first film up under Darko Entertainment is one titled Dirty Girl directed by Abe Sylvia. The film is a comedic story of the search for identity and the redemptive power of unexpected friendship. Danielle is the dirty girl of Norman High School. When Danielle’s misbehavior gets her banished to special ed, she teams up with an innocent closet-case and together they head out on a road trip to discover each other and themselves through a funny and serendipitous friendship.
With the Darko venture, McKittrick said, "Our goal is to get behind filmmakers with unique voices and take advantage of the Darko brand to help independent films reach a much wider audience."
Sounds great to us - I look forward to the films produced under Darko. Great indie films need all the support they can get. Without this kind of support we'd never have Kevin Smith and Clerks, Quentin Tarantino and Reservoir Dogs, the Saw franchise, Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, or even Richard Kelly and Donnie Darko! Good luck to a great future of great films Richard Kelly and Darko Entertainment.

Save the puppy Richard, save the puppy."

"Just letting you know, the puppy is dead! Shame on you Richard! Shame on you!"
So it appears Richard was to late to save this puppy…

Alex,
"Southland Tales" is the first film under the Darko Entertainment label, followed by "The Box"…
"Dirty Girl" will be the first film not directed by Kelly under the Darko label, but it will still be the third film under that label.
I think it's great that Kelly and McKittrick have decided to reach out to help other filmmakers trying to get started in this business. Hopefully, Kelly will get more involved in the producing aspect as well, I know he is receiving his first producing credit for "The Box".
There is a rumor floating around that the Southland Tales trailer will be with "Resident Evil: Extinction" and/or "Across the Universe" releasing this week. Maybe, that is what Richard is referring to when said, "I am told by Sony/Goldwyn that it will be released this week in a very big way."

Finally! A trailer! This is one of those flicks that will fall under "I'll see it, even if it looks bad," thanks to the strength of Donny Darko.

Can't wait to see anything written, produced or directed by Abe Sylvia. He has a proven track record of humor, brilliance and sensitivity. He will prove to be a great film maker.
