Play On! Need A Break From Halo 3? Watch One Of These 5 Picks
September 26, 2007
by Andy Adair
For many people across the nation, yesterday was just your normal day. However, to many millions of gamers around the world, September 25th should've been a holiday. Why? Well September 25th was the day Halo 3 was released on the Xbox 360. And with that release comes hours upon hours of gaming. I know this for a fact, playing over seven hours on my first night and completing the campaign with a few friends. But what happens when you need a little break from your gaming experience? Do you sleep? Do you rest for an hour or two before playing again? What I suggest to you is this: put in a movie that will get you pumped and excited for more Halo! Here are five personal picks that I believe will get you ready for the full Halo experience.
Although I know most hardcore gamers out there won't be taking a break at all, playing for days non-stop, this list is for when you find that occasional hour or two after beating the campaign on Legendary. When you need to give your thumbs a rest before you jump back into 10 more hours of slayer on Xbox Live. All these movies will do is leave you more pumped for Halo 3 by the end, so enjoy!
Blade Runner

Running Time: 1 hour, 57 mins
The first is Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford and directed by Ridley Scott. Released in 1982, the film takes place in 2019 in Los Angeles. Harrison Ford's character Rick Deckard is in charge of destroying four fugitive genetically engineered cyborgs. My suggestion of Blade Runner is to get you in the mood of the sci-fi feel of Halo 3. The movie by itself is a great flick, and hopefully you will find some motivation here.
Pitch Black

Running Time: 1 hour, 50 mins
The second film that I suggest is Pitch Black starring Vin Diesel. This is another great sci-fi film with plenty of action and violence. This has more of that "Halo" feel to it, and one can at times compare the heroics of our beloved Master Chief with those of Riddick. This one is a good selection for sure that'll leave you in the mood to blast some Covenant brutes!
Matrix Revolutions

Running Time: 2 hours, 9 mins
Third, I suggest Matrix Revolutions. Assuming you have seen the first two Matrix films, this is the perfect one for you to watch on a break from Halo 3. It is the third installment into the series as is Halo 3, and it does a good job of putting a closure on the series, as Halo 3 does as well. There are comparisons in the story between both as well, and as you play through Halo 3 you will soon see what I am talking about!
The Fast and the Furious

Running Time: 1 hour, 46 mins
For a fourth film, I suggest The Fast and the Furious, also starring Vin Diesel (from Pitch Black). I can't tell you what similarities are held between this film and Halo 3 without ruining anything, but it is a great movie to get some last minute driving instruction. And the adrenaline you'll have from watching the races in this will leave you pumped and ready to mow down enemies in your Warthog.
Die Hard

Running Time: 2 hours, 11 mins
Lastly, I suggest the original Die Hard. This is a classic shoot 'em up film and you can't go wrong here. If you're like me, you imagine every enemy you kill in Halo is Hans Gruber. Get pumped by watching the ultimate badass John McClane kick ass and take names in this 1988 masterpiece.
No matter what movie you decide to watch while taking a break, just remember that Halo 3 is your primary focus. Relax, get pumped, enjoy a good film, and then get back to the grind in this years shoe-in for game of the year. And if you find your self in a position like me with a girlfriend around, be careful, because your break from Halo 3 might be spent watching A Walk to Remember instead!

I'd have to add in Aliens. I adore the Halo series specifically for the storyline, but even I can admit that it's essentially a retelling of Aliens with a twist.

Man if you gotta girl get her playing co-op. Girls play Halo too and we are usually pretty good at it.
I'd toss Matirx Revolitions and watch Aliens or Star Trek First Contact myself. Or better yet, watch all the extras form the game. You did get the game with the extras, didn't you?

Replace Fast & the Furious with the car chase scene from "Ronin" (one of the best ever, in my opinion.)

I'm going to have to echo the previous commenters' sentiments. Not having Aliens, yet including The Fast and the Furious is disgraceful.
And Halo 3 is just an overhyped, more full-featured, HD-version of Halo 2.

I have to say, I'm on chapter 7 and still not picking up on the Fast and the Furious connection. I did, however, appreciate the direct nod to Aliens where one of the Marines yells "Game Over! I mean, for them."
Also, you can't go wrong when you have Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk among the many geeky voiceovers.
