Juno Writer Diablo Cody's Burlesque - Moulin Rouge Mixed With Cabaret

Here's an eclectic film that just so happens to be worth talking about - it's called Burlesque and is being produced by Sony's Screen Gems. The film is a contemporary musical with 12 song-and-dance numbers; it will be directed by Steve Antin (Glass House: The Good Mother) and partially written by Juno's eccentric screenwriter Diablo Cody. Why does this stand out? The style their going for is supposedly something that crosses Moulin Rouge with Cabaret.
Burlesque centers on a young woman who tries to escape a hollow past and finds it performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles. What exactly is a neo-burlesque club and why isn't this going to be rated NC-17?
"Neo-burlesque is a contemporary take on the traditional burlesque that derived from vaudeville, with singing, dancing, comedy and more tease than striptease," Antin said.
Those of you who have seen Juno by now or at least know who Diablo Cody is know that she's an incredibly talented writer. She's written a book previously about working as a stripper (titled "Candy Girl") which I would imagine makes her quite qualified in writing Burlesque. On top of that, director Steve Antin hasn't done much on the big screen because he's apparently been writing and directing live shows in burlesque clubs for the past decade.
"This will be a sexy, music-filled film set in a provocative and artistic world," says Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper. This sounds like one of those movies that will pop up just in time to promote it and stay quiet until then. And with the right cast it could be pretty damn entertaining - especially with Diablo Cody working on the script!
