Indie Spotlight: Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain

In an attempt to shed some light on some independent films and expand our horizons from the typical mainstream blockbusters and comic book movies, I'm going to occasionally feature an indie movie that's in the news. Today it's a film titled The Burning Plain, both written and directed by Guillermo Arriaga, screenwriter of Babel, 21 Grams, and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Recently added to the film's cast is Kim Basinger who stars alongside Charlize Theron.
The film weaves together two storylines taking place in the past and present. Basinger will play Gina, the mother of Charlize Theron's character as seen in childhood. Theron will play Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood. The two narratives eventually converge. The drama begins shooting in early November in New Mexico.
I think the sole reason that The Burning Plain sounds so good is because of how much I loved Babel. I know a lot of it has to do with director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, but given Guillermo Arriaga wrote the script for Babel as well as 21 Grams and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, then I at least know this will have a fantastic script. I have a certain level of confidence in Arriaga because of how great the script from Babel was and with that I know he'll deliver with The Burning Plain.
