Wedding Crashers' David Dobkin to Direct The Flash

Hollywood continues to make more and more comic book movies and the one in the headlines today is The Flash. This project has gone through a number of other directors, including Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and David Goyer (Blade Trinity, The Invisible), but it seems to have finally officially landed in the hands of David Dobkin, who previously directed Shanghai Knights, Wedding Crashers, and this year's Fred Claus. MTV caught up with Dobkin recently who also added a few more juicy details about the project.
Dobkin reveals that he's signed with Warner Brothers to direct The Flash as a solo film, but that's not where the character will originate. George Miller's Justice League of America film is actually in the works and The Flash will exist in the same universe as that JLA. Dobkin's film will be a direct spin-off, likely the first of many solo spin-offs. When asked which Flash character would be the one appearing in his movie, Dobkin responded with quickly with Wally West, who appeared in the comics from 1986 to 2006 and again in a recent series this year.
Originally created in 1940 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert for DC Comics, The Flash has the ability to run and move extremely fast, use superhuman reflexes and violate certain laws of physics, like time travel. He's easily identified by his symbol of the lightning flash in a white circle and a red costume.
While Dobkin is a rather comedic director, apparently The Flash won't be as comedic as everyone's expecting. As for a tagline for his project, here's what Dobkin stated: "You can't outrun yourself." Now that just sounds rather tragic in actuality! Although I'm already expecting the Justice League movie to be pretty bad, hopefully this will be a bit better as a solo film. It still won't be as good as Iron Man, The Dark Knight, or even Wolverine, but at least it should be enjoyable.

I wonder if they're gonna play up the legacy aspect of the character. The choice of using Wally West seems to suggest this, as Wally was always questioning himself & comparing himself to his mentor the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen. But then again Barry died back in the 80's so maybe the newer kids don't even know him. Guess we'll see…
