Indie Spotlight: Cheryl Hines Directing Adrienne Shelly's Serious Moonlight

If you saw the sweet indie comedy Waitress earlier this summer, then you know the work of Adrienne Shelly. Her story is incredibly tragic, as she was murdered late last year in New York right as her filmmaking career was beginning to blossom. Thanks to great friends and family, her work will continue to flourish, including a screenplay she wrote titled Serious Moonlight. Waitress co-star Cheryl Hines has opted to make her feature directorial debuted with Serious Moonlight and will start filming this December.
Serious Moonlight is a dark comedy about a troubled marriage on the precipice. The film centers on a high-powered female attorney who learns that her husband is about to leave her for another woman, then prevents him from doing so by binding him to the toilet with duct tape. The wife's plan becomes complicated when the couple's home is besieged by robbers. The film is currently being cast by producers Andy Ostroy, Shelly's husband, and Michael Roiff.
This definitely has a much different mood than Waitress, but the unique Adrienne Shelly comedy in that I'm sure will be slightly prevalent in Serious Moonlight. As for Cheryl Hines directing, I'm a bit worried. She has that Southern brain-dead charm on screen, but behind the camera I don't think that's going to get her too far. Let's hope she's smarter working as a director than she is as Jamie Munro in RV.

Hines is incredibly smart and I think her improv background with the Groundlings and years with Larry David will serve her well.
