Naomi Watts Joins Ron Howard's Angels and Demons

England-born and Australia-raised Naomi Watts has joined Ron Howard's adaptation of Angels & Demons. The film, based off of Dan Brown's bestselling novel of the same name, is officially a prequel to The Da Vinci Code, although Hollywood is creating it as a sequel to that movie from 2006. Watts will likely star as Vittoria Vetra, the adopted daughter of CERN scientist Leonardo Vetra, who meets Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks) and tags along with him in his adventure. An official statement stating that she'll play Vetra hasn't been made yet, but it's likely the case.
Angels & Demons is one of the films that is being directly affected by the Writers Strike. Just a few days ago we ran an article about the film being delayed because the script, written by Akiva Goldsman, still needs polishing. However, what I imagine Sony and the production companies behind Angels & Demons are doing is getting everything together and moving along anyway. According to our article, the film's opening was moved to May 15th, 2009. That date change gives them plenty of time to get the script fixed and production underway in Rome. They can easily start scouting locations, securing actors, and even building sets despite the script not being perfectly polished.
Watt's character, Vittoria Vetra, is described in the book as the following.
"Lithe and graceful, she was tall with chestnut skin and long black hair that swirled in the backwind of the rotors. Her face was unmistakably Italian - not overly beautiful, but possessing full, earthy features that even at twenty yards seemed to exude a raw sensuality. As the air currents buffeted her body, her clothes clung, accentuating her slender torso and small breasts."
I'd say Naomi is pretty sensual and pretty earthy, no? Just looking at a photo of her (the gorgeous one above), it seems like she's the perfect fit for Vittoria, as long as her hair is darker. I'm looking forward to Angels & Demons more and more as all of this production gets underway, especially after just reading it a couple of months ago.

Savvy move for Naomi! Adding more star power next to Tom Hanks! Wonder if Audrey Tatou will reprise her role? This could get really hot! Think of this as the Langdon….Robert Landon 'girls'.
Let's hope the writer's strike ends soon. This is one flick I'd really like to see.

Naomi Watts is a great actress and I like her but frankly she is a terrible choice to play Vetra. Are you telling me that with all of the hundreds of Italian actresses out there they couldn't find one who was actually Italian? Throughout Angels and Demons, Brown repeatedly describes Vittoria as looking extremely Italian most specifically when he describes her face as being "unmistakenly Italian" with "full earthy features." Her also describes her as having naturally olive, tan skin. There is even a scene where Langdon marvels at the way Mediterreans seem to revel in "the sun." Naomi is gorgeous but she does not look Italian. Even if they dye her hair dark she still has tiny English looking features. Oh well. I'm sure it will still be a great movie but as an Italian myself I'm dissapointed in this casting. It is so rare for there to be positive movie roles specifically designed for Italians or Italian Americans. Most of the time they wind up playing gangster's or gangster's wives. Here, there was a positive character created by the author providing a positive opportunity for an Italian actor and it was given to a blond English/Austrailan woman. Dissapointing. But as I said, I'm sure Naomi will still do a good job. She's talented.

I think Monica Bellucci would be perfect for Vittoria!
Naomi is very pretty, though. I think she will do a fine job!
And, who is Orlando Bloom going to play in this movie?
