Alex's Summer of Greats: My Most Highly Anticipated Films
by Alex Billington
April 16, 2007
Inspired from a post over at The Movie Blog, I've decided to put together my own list of my most highly anticipated summer films of 2007. You already know what all of the really big ones are, it's just time to see which ones I'm really looking forward to. In similar fashion, I'm going to revisit this list at the end of August to see how well they all stood up to the big summer test. Without further ado, let's dive right in.
1 - Spider-Man 3
Could there be anything more exciting?! And the best news of all... I see it in 4 days! The second Spider-Man is one of my all-time favorite comic book films and I have a soft spot for Tobey Maguire's excellent portrayal of Peter Parker. On top of that, they're putting everything into this, and it's probably the biggest budget out of any Hollywood movie ever. I don't know a movie I've ever been more excited to see (except maybe Return of the King)!
2 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
I actually really enjoyed the second Pirates, it was just one hell of a fun ride. It was the trailer for the third one that really did it for me. I haven't seen a more exciting trailer since then and I've been getting that much more excited for how incredibly epic this third movie is going to be. Can't wait to see Jack and Davy sword fight and the massive whirlpool battle and much more! This one is going to definitely top the "ride" that the second and first ones were!
3 - Ocean's 13
The first Ocean's 11 (the Soderbergh remake) is one of my all time favorite movies that's made its way onto my top 10 list of favorite movies, and this one looks like the return to the first one that the second movie was not. It's coincidental that my top 3 most anticipated movies are trilogies, but I'm really looking forward to another great Ocean's movie like the first one.
4 - Transformers
I wasn't impressed at the footage I saw at ShoWest, but it's been the recent trailers and footage and photos that have really got me hyped up for one of the guaranteed most explosive films this summer. I know it's going to be cheesy, but I'm looking forward to some awesome Transformers action that will be unlike anything else this summer!
5 - Ratatouille
I'm a huge sucker for Pixar and the footage I've seen has been incredible. I'm already sold on this and am really waiting for what will probably be the best down-to-earth heartfelt flick of the summer and a return to enjoyable Pixar (unlike Cars and Nascar). I was always confident in Pixar and I think Brad Bird will definitely pull it off again.
6 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
They've been getting better and better every film. The last one was incredible. I hope this one tops that, even though I haven't heard that much great stuff about the book (friends say it's their least favorite), but I'm another sucker for the Harry Potter world and I'm really looking forward to all of the mayhem and madness now that Voldemort is on the loose!
7 - 1408
I'm not that big of a horror or thriller fan, and only go whenever I'm really convinced it will be unique. And I swear I am scared of ghosts more than I am anything, but damnit, I want to see this! It looks like it's going to scare the shit out of me and at the same time be hugely thrilling and enjoyable. It may be one of Cusack's only good flicks this summer!
8 - Live Free or Die Hard
I'm not as big of a Die Hard fan as a lot of other people (I don't even remember seeing them), but the trailers recently have been getting me in the mood for one hell of an awesome movie with more Bruce Willis ass-kickage than you can shake a stick at. And it will be just as fun of an experience as you can imagine, since all of my friends are going to make me watch all of the first three Die Hard movies many times before this one.
9 - Fido
I've already seen it (oh no!), but I'm excited for the event and experience that will be Fido's nationwide release. I'm excited to get everyone else into it and introduce everyone else to the great fun and brilliant ride that makes up Fido. It's like watching Shaun of the Dead all over again and being introduced to such an original and brilliant zombie comedy.
10 - Surf's Up
Damnit, I know I'm alone on this, but the footage they've shown has gotten me really excited. I don't like that many of the cheap, cheesy animated kids films, but this one looks like it's going to be a bit more. It's not going to beat Ratatouille, that's for sure, but I'm hoping it will be another one of my favorites this summer.
I'll be back in August to check up and see how well all these rank up after actually seeing them!
