The last update we had on X-Files 2 was way back in March, which said that it would be coming for sure in 2008. This is the sequel that's been endlessly delayed, but both reports, including the one today, have come from David Duchovny himself, which means this time it doesn't sound like another false hope. Today's progress update comes from IGN which caught Duchovny at a "Californication" panel and fired a few X-Files 2 questions his way.
Duchovny said that he's finally supposed to get a script in the next week and that it's actually progressing quite smoothly. Here's an excerpt from the interview over at IGN.
"I'm actually supposed to see it next week! Before I would just say that [there was a movie] because they told me, but now, after talking to Chris [Carter] -- he's been giving me progress reports -- and he actually called yesterday, and said 'Next week, you should have something to read.'"
The script is being written by Chris Carter, who created the series and also write the first X-Files movie, as well as Frank Spotnitz. The plan is also to have Carter direct the film in his directorial debut. Other confirmed details are that Gillian Anderson is on board and that it is still aiming for release sometime in 2008.
I'm looking forward to this quite a bit, as I'm a fan of the film without having really watched the TV series at all. Let's hope they can pull off an even better sequel, even though that's quite rare nowadays.
