Guillermo del Toro's Next Film IS At the Mountains of Madness!
by Alex Billington
October 3, 2007
This has been one of those in-the-works passion projects for Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro. He was even talking about it to some interested fans back at Comic-Con in 2006, but the film hasn't really gone anywhere - until now! The guys at LatinoReview.com have learned that Guillermo will be directing At the Mountains of Madness next after he finishes Hellboy 2 (due for release on July 11, 2008) for Universal Studios. The film is adapted from the H.P. Lovecraft novel about explorers who journey to Antarctica where they uncover an ancient race of beasts in the ruins of a lost civilization.
Previously it had been announced that Guillermo del Toro would be directing a live-action Tarzan, but that film has been put on hold because the script isn't ready. Given the impending writer's guild strike that may happen in the next few weeks, if that script doesn't get polished up and delivered soon, we may not see it before the end of the decade. In the meantime, At the Mountains of Madness is a go and will be Guillermo's next project.
The novella was first written in 1931 and the story is considered to represent the decisive "demythology" of Cthulhu. You can pick up a copy of it from Amazon.com if you're interested in reading it well before Guillermo makes his version. The script is also supposedly really damn good, written by Guillermo himself, with a script review available at LatinoReview.com as well.
