Independent Spirit Awards

This is for all you film buffs who can't miss the best independent movies out there. The movies that make it onto this nomination list aren't anything but the greatest indie movies, or probably even the greatest movies, of the year. The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't be receiving at the Oscars. This list arrives well in advance of the Oscars, despite that the winners won't be awarded until February 23rd of next year. Without further ado, we present to you the Independent Spirit Awards nominees.

I haven't seen every one of these, but I've seen most (thanks to attending the Toronto Film Fest and a keen eye on the good indies that come my way). I've denoted my personal choices with a red *.

You'll notice the [IMDb] link next to each one. This is so you can explore and discover, because there is guaranteed to be a movie you've never heard of on this list.

A couple of notes to make. I think Juno is going to sweep the awards next year, I can just feel it. Second, it's very honorable of them to nominate Adrienne Shelly for Waitress, and I really hope she wins, because her screenplay deserves it. Lastly, the cinematography in Lust, Caution was incredible, some of the best I've ever seen. It just barely nudges out The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which is some of the most creative cinematography ever.

Good call on The Lookout. I'm glad to see that get at least SOME recognition.

I would've put "King of Kong" on the best doc list...
