Maggie Gyllenhaal Replacing Katie Holmes in Dark Knight

March 9, 2007

Just a quick bit of confirmed casting news. This rumor has been running rampant for a LONG time, but finally some legitimate confirmation comes from Variety today. The news is that Maggie Gyllenhaal (most recently seen in a great role in Stranger Than Fiction) will replace Katie Holmes (Tom Cruise's woman) as Rachel Dawes in the Batman Begins sequel titled The Dark Knight. I'm probably alone on this, but I liked Katie Holmes, however Gyllenhaal is a very fine replacement. We'll see in July of '08.

  • I actually agree with you that Katie Holmes wasn't awful in Batman Begins. Honestly, the character really didn't server a whole lot of purpose, but I'm all for seeing Maggie in the next Batman movie. I think she's more of a solid actor and will do nothing but strengthen the cast as a whole.

Nice replacement. I didn't mind Katie Holmes but I think her real life was overshadowing the movies she was in. And yes, the character didn't have a lot to it. Hopefully they flesh the character out a little bit. And I hope that this casting sticks and there doesn't end up being a revolving cast of women in the Batman movies. Though I'm not sure how many women come and go in the comics. I haven't read them.

I don't think it was so much Katie Holmes that bugged me. I just think it was kind of a throw away character. She didn't really do much. You'd expect this hard ass Assistant DA to do a bit more and be a bit stronger. i don't know, maybe it's just me...

I have to agree with you folks, the Holmes character was kind of a throw away in Begins. However, I could see Gyllenhaal doing a much better job with what she's given in the next script. Only problem I see with this script is that Chris got his brother Jonathan helping with the screenplay on this one which kinda scares me because they collaborated on The Prestige and that wasn't exactly the movie of the yar (unlike Batman Begins which WAS made to perfection 😀 ) Cross your fingers!
