Directors Guild Awards Nominations

The nominations for the 60th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards have been announced. These are the awards, like the Screen Actors Guild awards, that truly recognize the most phenomenal achievements in directing as chosen by their peers. No one else knows great directing like directors themselves, and hence this is a true list of the best of the best and probably a majority of the films that will end up being nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. If you haven't seen them yet, these are the must see movies of 2007.
Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy - Michael Clayton
Sean Penn - Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
"2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the DGA Awards," said DGA President Michael Apted. "We are very proud to have today's five nominees join the illustrious list of directors that have been nominated for directorial excellence in feature filmmaking over the past 59 years. What makes this award truly meaningful to directors is the knowledge that only this one is decided by their peers - the men and women who know first-hand the passion, sweat and fear that goes into each production."
The winner will be announced at a reception on January 26th, and we'll be sure to let you know whom they choose. Only six of sixty winners (in DGA history) have gone on to NOT win an Academy Award - a good sign for the nominees and whoever wins.
I have a very good feeling that Joel and Ethan Coen are going to win, although this list points out some of the best movies of the year, courtesy of the director. The only one that sticks out is Sean Penn and I think it's because of his connections with the DGA, not because of his actual directing achievement in Into the Wild. Otherwise, this is a great list of the best of the best of 2007.

You really think the Coens will win over P.T. Anderson? I'm not personally claiming I know who'll win - far from it, actually - but it seems like Mr. Anderson has been the talk of Tinseltown since Blood came out.

Daniel's performance in "There will be blood" was the centerpiece of this film, and a lot has to do with Daniel's ability as an actor, and also PT as a director. BUT, I think that "No country", as a whole, was a more enjoyable film due to the story, how the directors crafted each scene, each character, each performance, and gave us as complete film as I have seen in a long time. Everything worked!
I still have to see "Diving bell…" but so far, my money's on the Coens, because they delivered a total pkg, which couldn't have been easy. But kudos to all nominated, because they really did excellent work.
