First Look: Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe in Daybreakers

After I Am Legend and 30 Days of Night, I think we need a break from vampires. But all in the same they could also be coming back in style, who knows? Daybreakers is a movie due out this year that stars Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe as two dueling vampires. Similar to I Am Legend, the year is 2017 and a plague has transformed almost every human into a vampire, however they're not brain dead, hovering sacks of meat. This is more like Blade, as you'll see below, where the vampires are still very human.
Ethan Hawke plays Ed, a researcher in the year 2017, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.
And who exactly is Willem Dafoe in Daybreakers? We still don't know. Nothing on his character has been revealed, but as is obvious below, he's not a direct enemy of Ethan Hawke, at least not in that scene. From what it seems, I'm guessing the two are sort of mad at each other in some way. I'm guessing Dafoe loves being a vampire and wants to find more blood and strive, where Hawke prefers to try and save the human race. In a previous interview, Hawke said that Daybreakers is "really dark and weird and everybody's sucking each other's blood."
The new photos come courtesy of Collider, so send some love their way. Willem Dafoe can be seen to the far right in the first photo below.

Daybreakers is both written and directed by brothers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, who previously directed a 2003 sci-fi horror flick titled Undead. The film should arrive in theaters via Lionsgate sometime in 2008. Let's hope this isn't another Skinwalkers, which was a Lionsgate film as well.

I've got a sneaking suspicion this is going to be a surprise hit! The look of this looks very much how a futuristic vampire set film would and should look like. Not to mention, I liked "Undead", I thought it was great, in the vein of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive".
I like Hawke and I like Dafoe. Let's see what they've got lined up to do together!
