Dennis Quaid Cast in G.I. Joe Movie as General Hawk!

Thankfully this is the last big G.I. Joe casting news we'll seen in a while! We mentioned earlier today that Channing Tatum would play Duke in G.I. Joe, which has been confirmed via Hollywood Reporter, along with another surprising casting announcement. Dennis Quaid has been cast in the lead role as General Hawk, the team leader of the G.I. Joe squad. How about that for an age difference? Tatum is 27 years old, and Quaid is 53 - a 27 year difference, but alas, that won't matter in the end, but is there anything else worthwhile talking about now?
In the Tatum casting article, I was questioning who was who and how exactly the characters will play out. We now have some clarification on each of the characters. General Hawk (Dennis Quaid) is the "keenly intelligent and perceptive" team leader of the G.I. Joe squad. Duke Hauser (Channing Tatum) works closely on missions with Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), and Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), and The Baroness (Sienna Miller) are all also part of the squad, each with particular specialties. For more info on the G.I. Joe universe and the characters, head to Wikipedia.
What are you thoughts on this diverse cast? There is an incredibly wide range of actors involved in the film, which could be good, and could be bad. Is this on its way to becoming the next Transformers or the next 80's revamp flop?
G.I. Joe is directed by Stephen Sommers (Deep Rising, The Mummy, Van Helsing) and written by both Stuart Beattie and Skip Woods. The movie arrives in theaters on August 7th, 2009.

Cool news, but uhm…isn't that Duke's picture next to Quaid's? General Hawk in the animated series always wore a green helmet with a dark brown coat. Thought it worth mentioning.
Awesome site, guys! I wish you were around when I lived in Aurora!

So far the only casting that makes sense is Ray Park.

It's not the casting that I'm too worried about it…it's the director that's scary! Stephen Sommers? I think he's too flashy of a director that relies on CG and comedy too much. I understand that GI Joe is a cartoon, but in order to bring it to the big screen…one has to make the concept a bit more serious, and I don't think Stephen Sommers can do that. He'll make GI Joe a joke like the Fantastic Four and the already terrible Iron Man films (I still can't believe Robert Downy Jr. is Tony Stark…total opposites except for their alcohol problems).

How does a 27yr old become a LTC in the Army. Even in the fictional GI Joe world. Unless his name is George Custer……
Why not make Cobra Commander one of the Hansen brothers.. MMMM suck..

That's definitely a picture of Duke, not General Hawk. After watching Dennis Quaid in the movie Vantage Point, I think he would be GREAT as General Hawk.
