Oscar-Winning Director Anthony Minghella Dead at 54

British filmmaker Anthony Minghella has passed away today at age 54. Minghella suffered a brain hemorrhage at 5AM on Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck the week prior. Best known for his Oscar powerhouse The English Patient as well as The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, and most recently Breaking and Entering, his loss is truly tragic within the film community. Our heart goes out to Minghella's family and friends.
I remember seeing Breaking and Entering early last year and thinking to myself, Anthony Minghella is such a wonderful director and why haven't I recognized his work previously. Jude Law describes his work best in a message he released today: "He was a brilliantly talented writer and director who wrote dialogue that was a joy to speak and then put it on to the screen in a way that always looked effortless. He made work feel like fun. He was a sweet, warm, bright and funny man who was interested in everything from football to opera, films, music, literature, people and, most of all, his family whom he adored and to whom I send my thoughts and love. I shall miss him hugely."

I had no idea who he was, now I read he was the director of Breaking and Entering and Cold Mountain, such beautiful movies. Shame on me! A true loss indeed. R.I.P.

What a brilliant Guy Anthony Minghella was….it is a tragic loss of talent. I was hooked after watching Truly Madly Deeply years ago and the English Patient…What a great loss to the people who knew him and people like me who never knew him but appreciated his work…and of course the film industry.
My thoughts go out to his family and all who loved him-
