The Wachowski's Sequels Galore - Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin

While I'm not able to outright talk about Speed Racer yet, I can tell you that a sequel would definitely be welcome. The movie delivers so much incredible entertainment that I'm not only already excited to see it again, but I would be more than happy to see this turn into a franchise with at least two more movies. Just last week we caught up with producer Joel Silver, who is essentially the Wachowski's unofficial rep since they don't do any publicity. In addition to hearing all about the inner workings of Speed Racer, Steve over at Collider was able to get a few new details out of him about prospective sequels.
As we've mentioned before, Joel Silver never really answers questions without creating even more intrigue. This time he does happen to mention that the Wachowski's do have ideas for sequels to Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin - but not much more than that.
"Look, they have a great story idea for a sequel to [Speed Racer], we have a great idea for a sequel if it makes sense to make it. They have a great idea for a sequel to Ninja [Assassin] if they want to make it. We're having a good time. I love working with them and it's a great joy to have them in my life. They're smart and funny and they love the kind of movies I love and they know how to make them like no one else. I look at this movie and can't believe we created it. I can't believe it exists."
Joel makes a great point - Speed Racer is definitely one-of-a-kind and I guarantee you will walk out of it saying you've never seen anything like it. And when you see it, too, I hope you walk out with a big enough smile across your face that the Wachowski's want to make the sequel they've already dreamt up. Unfortunately Silver won't ever reveal what the ideas for the sequels are and it's unlikely we'll ever hear about them until both movies have hit theaters anyway. Or at least until after May 9th when Speed Racer hits theaters.
I know sequels are a very sore subject with the Wachowski's. The majority seems to dislike both Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions and I'm sure are a bit weary of anything they do next. This reminds me a bit of Pixar, who rarely ever does sequels, but this time I'm not as worried. I feel like the Wachowski's have got another Toy Story, where a sequel will build upon the first and hopefully turn out better. And this time they're starting with a sequel in mind. The idea for a sequel to the Matrix took too long to culminate after it became a cult success and that hype got to their mind.

Better be good Alex. I think it sounds bad but I am seeing it 5/3 at Tribecca.

Haha…this is fantastic
Glad to see how much you loved Speed Racer
People shouldn't be worried about sequels.
Let's clear up one thing, though…
The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions:
I'm one of the few people who thinks that The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions are misunderstood masterpieces. Like 2001 or Blade Runner, they are the work of two cinematic geniuses (and I don't use that word lightly) who have used a big Hollywood budget to create an monumental work of art that is not appreciated by contemporary audiences.
Now they've resigned to doing more lighthearted, fun entertainment for the time being. Which I'm relishing as much as the next person. But I hope that they one day come full circle and try once again to break the mold no matter what the risks.
It's that willingness to take risks with millions of dollars that allows the Wachowski Brothers to enter the Pantheon of truly great directors.
Speed Racer Sequels:
Unlike Reloaded and Revolutions, Speed Racer is not the kind of franchise that will increase in intellectual complexity - and thus lose its audience - with each film. It's going to be Indiana Jones-style serial fiction…just like the original cartoons!

Wow, news of a sequel prior to the film even coming out. I guess they are bit ahead of themselves. I guess with names such as Wachowski you can try and get away with anything
Can't wait to see the film, may have to pay for this one
My folks don't have the WB account
