J.J. Abrams Steps into Comedy with Hot for Teacher

J.J. Abrams, the "mystery box" producer behind Cloverfield and director of the upcoming Star Trek film, is taking a step into the more apparent and less labyrinthine. Abrams is set to produce a "Superbad-like" comedy called Hot for Teacher, which apparently surrounds a trio of high school virgins out to get laid before they graduate, with one targeting his teacher. I'm wondering: Does this storyline even sound interesting at this point, considering the well-played American Pie and Superbad? And is Abrams wanting him some Judd Apatow comedic notoriety?
To the first question, this doesn't sound very interesting to me at all. We've seen it done before, and done very well at that. It's hard to revisit this type of plot with any expectation that it might best Superbad; that film was executed so well. And we can forget the typical Abrams style of movie-making and trickery. This is a comedy after all, written by Joe Dyer of the TV show "Andy Richter Controls the Universe." Granted, Abrams isn't actually directing, so maybe this is just a way for his production company, Bad Robot, to diversify.
Speaking of diversity, perhaps Abrams has seen the viability of Judd Apatow-like comedy and wants a piece of that pie. After all, the first rule of managing a portfolio is diversification. Hot for Teacher would certainly get Abrams and Bad Robot into the field of comedy, stepping outside of drama, which was been the proverbial bread and butter. So does Abram's and Bad Robot's involvement in this project lend it any value? What do you think of Abrams now turning to a comedy?

Hah. That would be great. I don't know all of Abrams's work, but Lost has a shitload of humor, so I'm sure he can pull it off.

i think its great he's doing a comedy. to be honest i'm really getting tired of judd apatow. its the same comedy over and over.

i think hes a brilliant director, maybe the next spielberg and hes testing the water, and lost has plenty of humor so its certainly somethin id check out, and if it fails it wont hurt him bad as comedy isnt what hes known for
i wonder if it would be filled with mind games, and the teacher has to be a beauty, pure eye candy.
