The Escapist's Rupert Wyatt Lines Up Three New Films

I'm sure you've heard me mention a little Sundance gem called The Escapist. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, I implore you to go watch it right away. This brilliant film is French filmmaker Rupert Wyatt's latest directorial effort and it's absolutely incredible. If you need a sign that he did something right, then here it is. Wyatt just signed on to a total of three different films across two different studios: The Trail, Slipping Into Darkness, and an adaptation of "This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha." Each sounds as interesting as the last and I'm anxious to see how Wyatt will tackle each of them and their stories. However, before we get into the first of these three, everyone needs to make sure to see The Escapist!
Up first is The Trail, a drama Wyatt scripted together with Daniel Hardy, who he also collaborated with for The Escapist. The story follows two soldiers on a base in New Mexico who are led by a Native American woman up a trail to find her brother, who has been badly hurt in mysterious circumstances. The Trail will shoot in New Mexico in September but doesn't have a US distributor yet.
Following The Trail, Wyatt will go on to direct two different feature films. One is called Slipping Into Darkness that he will direct for Warner Brothers. Based on the novel by Peter Blauner, the film is a cat-and-mouse thriller about a cop who, 20 years after sending a teenager to jail for life, watches him freed on a technicality. When the body of a female doctor is found stabbed to death in the same manner as the original case, the investigation becomes increasingly complex. The script is being written by "Brotherhood" creator Blake Masters.
The other feature film Wyatt has signed on to direct is an adaptation of a book by journalist Samuel Logan titled "This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha" for Paramount Vantage. The film tells the story of Brenda Paz, a teenaged ex-member of the MS-13 gang who was killed by her comrades after she became an informant for the FBI. Wyatt will write the script himself and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, of Constantine, Transformers, and Stardust, will produce. The actual book isn't even due for publication in the US until July of 2009.
If I had to choose, based on what I saw in The Escapist, The Trail is the one film that I'm most looking forward to at the moment. I need to hear more about both Slipping Into Darkness and Mara Salvatrucha before I can actually say I'm interested in them. However, given The Escapist was absolutely phenomenal, I can say that I am easily looking forward to all of Wyatt's upcoming films. Once The Escapist hits theaters later this year, I'm sure all of you will agree that Rupert Wyatt is definitely an up-and-coming filmmaker that is going to make one hell of an impact in the next decade.

I like the second idea the best and then the third. The first one, not so much.
