Must Watch: Baz Luhrmann's Australia Trailer!
May 18, 2008

The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann's Australia has just popped up out of nowhere and damn does it look incredible! The latest batch of photos we showed you gave the impression that this would be something very unique and entertaining, like all of Baz Luhrmann's movies, but I didn't expect this! I'm completely impressed by this trailer and now very excited for the arrival of this film in November. It reminds me of a western, but with an Australian touch. The intro with Nicole Kidman and the girl reminds me of The Fall as well, but there's war and much more. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes out of their day to watch this trailer - you might enjoy it way more than you were expecting!

A romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia prior to World War II, Australia centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country’s most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier. With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvas, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle.
Australia is both co-written and directed by Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet previously. Other high profile screenwriters Ronald Harwood (The Pianist, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Stuart Beattie (Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean, G.I. Joe), and Richard Flanagan (The Sound of One Hand Clapping) have been involved with elements of the script as well. Australia is currently set to arrive in theaters on November 14th.

Does anyone else think that the music from :25-:40 sounds like "The Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good the Bad and The Ugly only slightly redone?

I love all of Luhrmann's films, but this one seems a little off. I'm not saying I don't like it, but I'm not convinced either way. Plus, my dislike of westerns isn't helping any.

I think this movie will be spectacular. There are not to many true auteur directors left in hollywood, and Baz is one of them. I think that this film will probably be his best, because it is a movie about his home. The passion is there for all of the players. People will be very surprised by how well this does( awards/ box office, etc). Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the budget is 140 million and he is not a wasteful director from what I know. I encourage every one that loves film to check out his set to screen series on itunes.

I feel like I should want to see this movie, I want to want to see it, but I don't. Not sure if its the trailer or what.

How did this get you excited Alex? The trailer didn't even explain the plot that well. I had to read the explanation provided below. And WHY does Nicole Kidman always put her hair back like that?! She looks soooo much better with long hair. This hairdo puts images of a PTSA President in my head, not sexy Nicole Kidman, hot actress from the Badlands of Australia.

Alex, you are true fan of movies, I can tell just from reading your posts…We have sort of similar taste and I admire you…Also, I think Australia will be just perfect, Yesterday I watched Moulin Rouge (again) and Baz is a genius; Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman? I'm in! ; )

Holy shit.
I hate you fox. You are winning me over with several of your movies nowadays.

Alex: I just get the feeling from the dialogue shown it was poor. It just looks tacky. You can slash anything together, put it over an orchestra, it will look good. The clips that presented the movie as it would be (without the orchestra and without the most dramatic scenes being picked out for a 15 second slideshow) looked poor IMO.

I have been waiting for this film for so long…I love Hugh Jackman…he is the perfect fit for the role and Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann are a great match as director/actress…even if the plot lets me down(which I highly doubt it will) I know the cinematography will be astounding…Alex you are right to be excited…and if you want to see a western…watch Unforgiven by Clint Eastwood…of course I am a softy for Mr. Eastwood…

One question, and maybe it's just me.
What happened to Nicole Kidman's face??

I was so extremely excited for this film, particularly after watching the set to screen podcasts, but I have to sort of agree with the people who aren't impressed with this trailer. I feel let down, although I'm not quite sure why. I'll still go see it, because trailers dont always mean anything. But I'm disappointed.

I actually think this looks pretty good. The landscape scenes and the fighter planes look like this could be quite promising.
Besides, Nicole Kidman performances are usually enough to sit back and appreciate regardless. By the way, Asswhipe, this isn't your personal blog website, keep your afflictions posted where people might appreciate them.
(Can't wait for his arbitrary response)

When Jackman first emerges from those doors, he looked exactly like Eastwood in The Good, the Bad, and the etc.

man, I was really looking forward to this having loved R & J and the Moulin Rouge. Sadly, this trailer disappoints. Something about it seems too good to be true.
After writing that I realized that's kind of Lurhmann's stock and trade: disbelief. He creates fairy tales that are larger than life. My better judgement tells me to remain wary of this movie but the believer in me wants to believe in Lurhmann and Kidman… I hope they come through.

I may be exaggerated but the cinematography looks amazing, definitely Oscar worthy. I hope the story is good too. I'm not a western fan but still the cameraworks is enough to attract me to see this film.

Looking forward to seeing it !!

I think your all nuts (anyon who didn't like it) I did see this trailer and say "yup, that's the one for me!"
This film looks amazing it'll be great for the world to get a little does of Australia in their tea and to learn a little about Australian history and the Sound World War from an Aussie view point not yet another Yankee one. And to say nothing about the awesome contribution it'll have to Australian tourism and the oldest feature film industry in the world, the Australian Film Industry.
On-yah Baz, you little ripper!!!
I can't wait.
PS I'm pretty sure if this film is coming out in Nov we're going to see a few more trailers after this. So don't judge a book by it's cover or a film by it's first trailer.

I love this trailer! The movie looks and sounds spectacular, and since it is Baz Luhrmann directing I think that's exactly what it will be. Wonderful acting, beautiful scenery, emotional and intense music, and romance and action/ adventure throughout the film. This is going to be a must-see, I'm sure!

This looks like a visual feast. Very excited about this. I hope Aussie-composer, David Hirschfelder is up to the task of scoring this film. Big. Bold. Epic. No holding back on this one - let the orchestra and didgeridoos rip!

I live in the Northern Territory where it's set and it looks just like my back yard. With a bit of movie magic added and minus 60 years of progress of course. Watching that makes me want to go camping this weekend ;-D

Oh, and just because it shows people droving cattle in the outback, doesn't necessarily make it a Western.

I'm really looking forward to this film. I've spent time in Australia myself, and personally know the hell that place can be. Just from this trailer, I can't see why this movie wouldn't be this year's "No Country" or "There Will Be Blood". I don't see much on the horizon, other than "Australia" that could rival those two. Add in the cast it's got, and you've got a recipe for greatness. However, we've got a while til November, and some more trailers headed our way. I'm crossin' my fingers that this one doesn't disappoint.
