Is Hulk Destined to Become a Bad Guy in The Avengers?

That's the question Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier discussed with MTV recently. It's clear by now that Marvel is launching individual franchises (e.g. Iron Man, Hulk, Thor) in anticipation of the 2011-slated The Avengers. But with a movie consisting of nearly half-a-dozen presumed good guys, who on earth (or not) might prove a worthy adversary? Leterrier pitches this idea: "I would love to see [the Hulk become the villain that fights the Avengers] because I think the best villains are always the ones whose agenda you understand." As it turns out, the idea that the Hulk could turn antagonist has legs that extend all the way from its origins in the comics. Warning: spoilers contained within!

Back in the 1960s when the Avengers debuted, the team consisted of the Hulk, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp and Thor. The group joined forces to battle Loki (Thor's step-brother). Shortly thereafter, the Hulk leaves the team apparently because the other members fear his instability. The Avengers try to locate the Hulk, which results in a battle between the two, and the eventual revival of Captain America. Obviously, this is a cliff-notes account, but it should give you a pretty good idea that this rendering of the Hulk has roots.

The idea has recent grounding, as well, in Marvel's property called The Ultimates, which is a modern-day version of the Avengers. Published in 2002, the original book in the series features Nick Fury as the organizer of the superhero sect. Fury recruits Giant-Man (previously known as Ant-Man), Wasp, The Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America. At some point, The Hulk goes AWOL, rampaging through Manhattan. Thor comes into play by assisting the team in subduing the green giant. There's a whole lot more going on in the Marvel Universe, but this storyline seems potentially fitting given that it involves Fury. We've already seen Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) attempt to recruit Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) at the end of Jon Favreau's Iron Man.

Smartly, Leterrier ends his Hulk with the greatest degree of flexibility in the story. As you'll recall in the film, Hulk ends with Bruce Banner tucked away in a mountain lodge enjoying some casual mediation and a new goatee. The camera zooms in as he opens his eyes, revealing both his glowing green irises and a half smile. "That's why I left the door open for whoever's going to direct The Avengers with our last shot," said Leterrier. "Edward and I, we consciously decided to make the last shot of the movie when he opens his eyes and he smirks at the camera. Is he enjoying it? Is he malicious? That's what's great about Edward. You don't know if he's a good guy or bad guy. He's always on this edge and we've been sort of surfing that edge, that very thin edge during the entire movie."

"So that last shot of the movie, if you decide that he's smiling, in control, then he's a good guy, that's The Hulk 2. If Hulk is a failure, then he looks up and smirks and that's eventually the Hulk of The Avengers - the uncontrollable beast that they need to team up to stop."

This whole topic and the various possibilities are incredibly exciting. I love it that Leterrier had the forethought to leave Hulk's future in question. Of course, it's hard to predict what might happen, since The Avengers will be adapted from mountains of Marvel material. For instance, Leterrier recently revealed that Hulk actually contains a supposed brief cameo of Captain America - a scene not in the theatrical version, at least right now. So if Bruce Banner meets Steve Rogers now, how does that track with the broader Avengers story?

There are tons of questions, to be sure, but the one at hand is: Who thinks the Hulk should go bad? And if you think your opinion doesn't count, Leterrier also said, "I would listen to the fans before I listen to the box office. They are the reason why these movies successful." You gotta love this guy!

i say do it, it's familiarity and the movie fans know who the Hulk is and of course heroes always fight amongst themselves.
plus there is and has always been bad blood between the Hulk and Iron man, it should translate into the movies well.

I don't think it's about the Hulk being 'good' or 'bad'. The whole point of the character is that he is out of control. Banner is the good guy while the Hulk is just the Hulk.

Now then there are plenty of villians to choose from, (The High Evolutionary, The Skrulls, Galactus) should I keep on. But let's leave it for the good old guys over at MARVEL. i would like the Hulk to be a baddie, but maybe not the main villain… maybe he gets attacked by the Avengers at the beginning and then time goes by and they reluctantly ask for his help with the main villain…

Of course The Hulk needs to be the villain. Go back and re-read your first issue of The Avengers and see why. It's classic. Even the in The Ultimates he's a huge pain and needs to be there. The end of this movie has him smiling and losing control. I think it's a perfect indication that he's going to keep losing and we can see that Hulk that hates Bruce and loves "Bet-ty"

Marvel always had great soap-opera plots in its comics, at least up through to early '80s, when I finally stopped reading them. Now it has to make sure that it brings that high-end drama and action to what could be a really great movie…or a piece of haphazard, hastily-prepared junk fit only for five-year-olds who haven't seen enough to know better (the poor, innocent kids). Don't cut corners, please! and make film your newest winning media, Marvel (you already won in the comic book arena).

Personally, I have always loved the goodie/baddie crossovers that Marvel have done, like in the X-Men comics when some of the good guys would become villains and some of the bad guys would end up as heroes, and hope they translate this into their movies. Not everything is black and white!

To be honest and I think most people will or should agree with me, movies are on average 2 hours some people think thats too much some too less some just perfect, personally I feel movies need a fullfilling experience even if its the first of a series of movies…so for there to be an avengers movie with multiple heroes and villans or villan character development is a big DEAL. If hulk were to have side drama with avengers it could be part of the movie but should def not take a big chunk out of it…to be honest if hulk were full on bad guy you would have to spend the whole movie about avengers and hulk and too me is a waste of a movie…so all in all i hope Leterrier reads this take my advice and don't pinpoint too much plot on hulk but to add side drama along with the avengers is fine but remember this would be the first movie so im going to assume either you create movies for each character in avengers for the character development or if you introduce them in the first movie its well done biggest problem with that you have to be careful using too much of the movie on character development alone is informative yes but not fulfilling so choose wisley on who should get there own movie "captain america yes maybe thor but giant man/antman and wasp i think u can bring them in with the first movie…now i know it was a simple question hulk good or bad but you can't just simply answer that question you have to look at the big picture. My answer is YES throw some good dramtic material with hulk having issues witht he team kinda like wolverine hissy fits, but NO don't make him a full on bad guy it would be bad for a 2 hour movie even if the first in a ?? series. HOPE this helps feedback on my opinion is appriciated.

I think we can agree what villains should be used for some of the upcoming Avengers movies.
Iron Man 2 NEEDS Mandarin.
Hulk 2 (or 3, whichever you prefer) will have Leader.
Thor has Loki.
Captain America will likely have Red Skull.

So what will the Avengers face?

Ultron would be good, but that require the inclusion of Hank Pym, if they make an Ant-Man movie.
Kang the Conqueror? Meh.
The Masters of Evil? Possibly, if Baron Zemo is not lame.
Loki? Not a bad choice, considering he was their first villain.

I'd rather see an in-control Hulk who is more developed and less of an animal, like he was at the end of The Incredible Hulk where he fought The Abomination for good because he KNEW he was bad, not just because he was messing with him like Mr Big was messing with the King of Pop in Moonwalker.

…wait, what acid? Oh and Mr Blue should turn into the Leader, as has been widely mentioned in the boards for the past couple weeks. So expect him to become Hulk's new villain. Btw, Hank McCoy is Beast from X-Men… nothing to do with Hulk.
On another note, I agree that maybe they should battle Hulk first and then have him become kind of like a rogue member, ala Wolverine, because there are bigger concerns than Banner's mental disorders.

What are you talking about sir? These spurious claims you're making are clearly uneducated. Mr.Blue is Hank McCoy? No, that wasn't even his name in the film. He's another character altogether. Which they revealed if you were paying attention.

Mr. Blue (Dr. Samuel Sterns), as in the comics, turns into the leader. Hence the smile, and growth of his head once the blood hit his scar. Even the background narrative was established for the next movie, in which he lusts for the Hulk's power, as it's "beautiful….godlike." Trust me, there will be a Leader.

i think the avengers should get in to a fight with the hulk but that shouldnt be what the movies all about..the real BAD GUY of the movie should be someing bigger that the avengers would need hulks help. and it would be realy cool if spiderman was part of the avengers, evry one loves spiderman. and hey peter parker is a genius and so is bruce banner well wile the rest of the avengers are trying to distroy the hulk parker could be trying to help banner. i realy dont think it should end like planet hulk were they just get rid of the hulk, like it of not hulks a hero NOT a bad guy.

Agree with 23, 32 & 35. Since Letterier already filmed (supposedly) a scene with Banner finding Cap frozen, they should use this to tie the Avengers together. At the end of the Hulk we see Banner up in British Columbia seemingly his whereabouts unknown. Since Stark is aware of the Green Beast and Banner's knowledge of biology, they look to recruit him for both his education (Banner) and his brawn (Hulk) by going to search for him with Stark's technology. This will lead to an encounter with Hulk, who has loner tendencies a la wolverine, using Hulkbuster armor and who will presumably not understand who Stark is and that his motives are well-intentioned. Thus, Hulk could be a supposed "baddie" for the opening of the film. Since Stark's Iron Man suit can fly and Hulk can bound, this could be a pretty dramatic knock-down drag out opening sequence set against a freshly snow-covered Canadian tundra. What a cool visual that would be to see the Hulk Green and the rich Red of Iron Man's suit juxtaposed against a blank canvas of white snow with wide angled sweeping shots (which is how I envisioned Letterier's scene when he mentioned Hulk in the Arctic) and seemingly large "boxing ring" (figurative) for a backyard brawl in which to fight sans civilization. At some point in the fight, they could end up near where Cap is frozen by accidental discovery or after the Hulk returns to Banner, Banner can be reasoned with by Stark and because Banner has learned to "harness" hulk and retrieve more of the suppressed Hulk memories, Banner will remember where he saw something in the Arctic. (Perhaps, since Betty is really Banner's antidote to Hulk, Stark with his reasoning ability, has the foresight to use the video technology at his disposal, to live stream Betty to convince the Hulk to "Banner" out and trust Stark.

Thus, Hulk wouldn't be a true villain really, but a temporary unintentional adversary who does battle Stark and/or the already pieces of the Avengers team to that point. Then he is converted to a card carrying member of the team to fight a more aggregious foe. Perhaps he plays a more loner member though who is reluctant to trust those around him but eventually comes to trust the various members of the team to a certain degree. Plus, the potential for sardonic levity of RDJ's wit/sarcasm as Stark in response to trying to get Hulk to corral his power toward various team's objectives to be productive instead of simply leaving a trail of destruction in his wake could be great.

Also, if the pipedream of having Wolverine as a part of the Avengers (even though a different studio is licensed…please fox work with Marvel knowing that an avengers movie allows you more fodder for Wolverine sequels) comes true, since Logan is Canadian perhaps he helps lead Stark over the Canadian wilderness since he too tried to go the Banner route being a loner and nomad on the run of sorts. Plus, since they are filming WW2 scenes in Wolverine's origins, there is great crossover potential that he would believe Stark when he talks about a supposed frozen super soldier and would join him on his trek to the arctic north.

Finally, imo, Hulk should always be played as a sympathetic, misunderstood brute…that's why the audiences love him and can justify his rampages and destructions. Because he is, as Banner, a passivist who happens to have enormous power at his disposal but hates the "hangover" effect and shame of his episodes, he thus always seeks out peace and quiet first until as a last resort folks willfully provoke the Hulk out of him. Thus, audiences see the antagonizers, not as victims, but rather as culpable for Hulk's actions, not Hulk himself.

totally agree with dr. samson. great point! i love it!!!!! just noticed one thing though with all comments from every freaking website, iron man and hulk is, and i mean IS definitely a great freaking back story (given marvel's great universe)…one word to point out "ILLUMINATI!!!!!" (long shot but keeping my fingers crossed) in terms fanboy movies though, it's clear though marvel clearly wins (HANDS DOWN!!!) i don't know why DC fuckin sucks!!! (except for batman!!!) there's just as good (if not better) in terms of comics….i don't know why they fucking suck making movies!!!! with regards to reboot, i hope they fucking reboot SPAWN!!!! now that definitely deserves a fucking reboot!!!

Dr Samson's idea is great. except for Fox cooperating with Marvel Studios. I believe any involvement with fox would be disastrous for The Avengers Movie. The Avengers need Supervillians that are powerful enough to give them a good fight. These supervillians objective should be to take over the world or destroy it. I vote for The Tech no-organic species known as The Phalanx controlled by Ultron.

It is clear to see, the hulk is smiling because of control, Ignorance will tell you its because he's out of control, although that may be the first thought to appear from first watching the scene, Although in the Avengers, The Hulk is not necessarily a villain, he is one to be stopped, for his inability to keep control, we all know the hulk is and Will always be a hero, and He is not a Strong a Enough Villain To carry any Movie, The Hulk is a good guy, Loveable and Immensely strong. I VOTE HERO, NOT VILLAIN. We need a Much Much stronger, more diabolical villain, someone to be reckoned with and Incredibly Hard To Defeat.

It's obviously few of you guys have read or seen Ultimate Avengers (It's obvious Marvel knows it too). If you had, it's not hard to see that the movies are being crafted to mirror the Ultimate's story line. From the involvement of SHIELD, the whole super soldier serum, to the gradual recruitment of each member etc., It's all there. Don't get me wrong fellas — I got away from reading comics in the late 80's too and just started to get back up to speed on the Marvel Universe with the rise of their movies within the last year. So as a true Marvel fan, I suggest all you guys check out the animated movies or read the ultimates series. It will both answer a lot of your questions and calm a lot of your concerns. It's all well done and like one of the earlier posts said, "IN STAN WE TRUST!" After seeing Iron Man and the Hulk brought to the big screen, I have all the confidence in Marvel's move to produce their on stuff. Spiderman may have been a box office hit but it's because of Marvel's success at developing him into an icon — not the qualitiy of those movies. While I did like the Fantastic Four and X-Men movies (minus a few casting blunders), Marvel's control of the movies is the best thing to ever happen to the super-hero genre of movies. They seem to both understand what made each of the series and their characters endure in the first place — THAT'S GOOD STORY TELLING first of all and HIRING QUALITY ACTORS second. So fear not, true believers.

As for the question at hand, In the Ultimate Avengers the Hulk is both a team member and ultimate adversary. I agree with those who said, Banner's smile at the end of the Hulk is a sign he feels he's gaining control. That's a perfect set up for the Ultimate story line that Banner becomes a member of the Avengers only to lose control and the trust of the team. I'm sure that's where they're headed with the movie and for those who haven't seen the ultimates I won't give any more away. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. I will say this though, although the story line seems to be shaping up to be similar, I"m sure they'll structure the plot in such a way that there are plenty of twists and surprises to keep it all fresh for the movie version. As for the true villains, it's a group of aliens called the Chitauri in the Ultimates. Who knows if they'll go there for the movie but I don't think that will ultimately make the movie. It's the conflict between the main characters that matter and anyone who knows the Avengers knows that's always been a prime element of the series. Besides, everyone expects movies based on books to mirror the same storyline. Why should it be different for a well-done comic book? So using the Hulk in that way is pure Marvel. Not that any of the pro-hero Hulk faction should worry, the big green guy is always a hero in the end.

One final word, as you can probably deduce from my name, I can't wait until the Thor movie. He's always been my favorite character and the Avengers because of him. I loved how they depicted him in the Ultimates and can't wait until the movie. The thing is — as much as I try, I can't imagine who they will cast in the role. I read they might be going with a British actor and the more I think of it the more I like the idea. Thor not only needs to be big, blonde and beautiful, but the role can only be pulled off by a subtle and superllative actor. Maybe someone with classical training or a Shakespearean background? So much for my two-and-a-half cents. Once again, IN STAN WE TRUST.

THE ULTIMATE'S is probly one of the BEST story lines I've read!!!!!!!!! This is coming from a guy who thinks all the characters (Cap, Thor, ant-man and Iron-man) are CORNY AS HELL!!!!! Ultimate' s is based in a real time world and is a great story for people who have never seen or liked these heros. I think it would make a great movie, the comic plays out like one.

I really loved the way they treated this in the animated Ultimate Avengers movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491703/). Hulk started out good, but then turned against the team and went on the most awesome rampage since… since… I can't think of a better rampage I've seen! I WANT to see that on the big screen. Pretty please with sugar on top.

If you want a good guy, a guy you can root for, that's what Banner is for. Give me the wild, rage-filled, lashing out at any and everything Hulk.

First let me start of by say The Hulk 2 was genius and the plot was fantastic. On the issue of The Hulk being good or bad, me and my brother have come to the conclusion that The Hulk shouldn't be made a bad guy in the avengers movie. After everything that marvel has done to make The Hulk a hero, it would make no sense for them to put him against the avengers in the movie. Honestly i think that would upset most fans, even if they know that the avengers at one time did fight the hulk. Truth is people want to see all there favorite heroes fighting on the same side and there are plenty of villains that could be used for the movie. The Hulk needs to be a good guy. If it were thor, iron man, captain america, and the hulk. It would be insane, it would need to be a long film to get a secure story line in place, but it would be worth it. Maybe they could throw in Wolverine seeing how there is a seperate movie coming out with him. There are plenty of villians in Marval. ALSO WHAT HAPPEND TO MR BLUE IN THE HULK I AM DYING TO KNOW PLEASE LIST IT ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe it is red skull but i believe i am wrong because the story line does not fit. But the Avengers is going to be sick, also the CAPTAIN AMERICA Movie will be sick as hell.

here it is for you. the hulk would make a very bad villian for this movie. he is always being attacked and never trying to cause destruction unless he is provoked. he wants to cure his disease and by that fact you have him confronted by the avengers trying to recruit him, an small but essential battle takes place, the hulk even tho uncontrollable comes to senses and joins them in the fight against whatever villain they choose to fight. but the thing about the hulk is he is uncontrollable and unstobbable (which is why he is my favorite marvel character). but at the end of the movie norton seems to have found a way to control the hulk. i think this might ruin the hulk character marvel fans have come to love. thats why in the avengers he will be removed from the team after they defeat the villain because there will be no cause for him to fight against. and the hulk is independent like Iron Man which doesnt seem to make sense either. i cant wait to see what the future holds though.

Goldilocks; I have read Ultimates and have recommended in "Marvel announces next four films-Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers" That Ultimates be used as The Avengers. However; everyone so far has ignored my comment. Of course Mr. Downy Jr. will continue to play Iron Man and Mr. Norton will continue to play The Hulk. As for the rest of The Avengers; I recommended A tall, blond, Scandinavian Actor. I'm sure That one of The Scandinavian Countries has a good actor who can play Thor. We have had very gook luck with the actors from the United Kingdom. I recommended Matt Damon for the part of Ant Man/Giant Man, Brad Pit for the part of Captain America and Angelina Joli to play the part of The Wasp. How about it; does anybody else think like Goldilocks and myself that The Ultimates would make a good Choice for The Avengers. In The Ultimate Universe; Nick Fury is black and has a patch over his eye. In the Non-Ultimate Universe; Nick Fury is white. I advise anyone that does not know about Ultimates buy or rent the two Animated Marvel Feature's named :Ultimate Avengers-The Movie and Ultimate Avengers 2-Rise of the Panther. I also recommend The Ultimates Trade Paper Backs that can be found in either Comic Book Stores or in Barnes & Noble Stores. At least; let me know what you think about my choices of Actors to play The Avengers.(Brad Pitt proved that he can handle a Shield pretty good in The Movie "Troy" ."

Third ; In the Avengers all the characters would be equal characters. Brad Pitt would be Captain America in The Captain America Movie. Anyway; I have recommended him for Captain America for The Captain America Movie. His ability to wield his shield for both defense and offense was very good. Third; I heard that they were thinking about a Wasp Movie. Angelina Jolie in the Wasp's costume alone would attract a large audience. Even if I misunderstood the Wasp Movie discussion; Angelina Jolie has played roles where she is not the main character. Then you infer that I am dumb. Again ; you don't know me. In America; we are all entitled to voice our opinion in a public forum. However; it does not have to be done in an inflammatory manner. ok ive seen the cartoons movies, very good, but not for the big screen. i agree we need a kick ass bad guy, but sence i havent read any comics in a very long time. im not gona recomand any, ok loki is my first choice then maybe the boyander. however loki isnt strong enough byhimself to warrent all the avenagers, he needs to team with somebody. thor can kick his butt all byhimself. Second what does anyone think of the idea of turning the hulk to grey and haveing him be a little more of a team player?? a smaller version maybe we could get a real actor to play him this time (whats lou ferignal doing these days) if he we're gray, i really liked the comics. they we're phunny.

They certainly could have hulk be the vilian. However I think it is more likely that avengers have a few tussles but they figure out he ain't so bad just in time for hulk to help save the world from Ultron. I like the scrulls idea, but would hate to involve anybody from FF4. In an avengers movie I predict that Pym, Banner, and Stark might already know or at least know of each other. Only for the reason that they are all super geniuses and Stark would probably know of any military experiments going on. He surely would have top secret clearance. Any way Cap will lead, Thor will be Thor and the three smart guys will be forced to put ther heads together to save the day.

I forgot the term that is used ( I think that it is anti-hero) but the Hulk should not be a true villian. He has never been a true "bad" guy. I think that in the movie he could be misunderstood thus considered a "bad" guy but way before the end of the movie, his true heroism must be shown.

I don't believe that you specifically mentioned comic book movies. There are very few comic book movies. Any example would have to come from other Hollywood movies. Another example of big time movie stars starring in an ensemble movie would be the Ocean 11 and Ocean 12 movies. The movies included Matt Damon, Brad Pitt,George Clooney and other movie stars who have been leads in other movies. Robert Di Niro and Al Pacino have played together. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law played In Road To Perdition. Road to Perdition was a Graphic Novel from DC. In SYRIANA;George Clooney and Matt Damon didn't let their stardom or egos get in the way. In The Usual Suspects Kevin Spacy and Benicio Del Toro also didn't let their individual stardom or egos get in the way of playing in an ensemble cast. However; you are right that there hasn't been a married couple play in a comic book movie. If that will stop your hominid attacks against me; you have won the battle of no intimate couples in comic book movies. Now can we get back to the actual subject. This is not about you and me. You are insulting the other commentators by trying to make it into a battle of words between us. I apologize to the other commentators. However; A Marine never backs down from a fight.

Hulk as villain? NO. Hulk is unstable. A great villain is truly diabolic, or at least is willfully malignant. I loved the Ultimates storyline! Loki as villain was the original in the original comic. Possible candidates also include alien invasion, like the Skrulls. I have posted my fave as Ultron, but Kang the Conqueror is also an excellent idea. So mant possibilities to choose from! Good thing Marvel owns their stuff. The DC adaptations are utter shite. Know why? Because they don't have interesting stories. Superman Returns? For shame! He shouldn't have!
