Must Watch: David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Trailer!
June 17, 2008
Source: Apple
by Alex Billington
The very first trailer for David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has finally debuted online! This first played in front of showings of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so I'm sure most people have at least seen it once, but you must watch it again. This is undeniably one of the greatest trailers I've ever seen in my entire life. It's up there with the first trailer for 300. The best part is that I believe this will also turn out to be a phenomenal film. If you need a refresher, go back and read this post that I wrote back in January. David Fincher is an amazing director and I think we might finally see his masterpiece this December. From Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button and Cate Blanchett as Daisy to David Fincher and screenwriter Eric Roth, everything about this is absolutely perfect.
I first wrote about this trailer after it debuted, and have since come to appreciate it even more. It's definitely a piece of art and I think it only goes to show how phenomenal the film will eventually be. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has shot to the top of my most anticipated list and I will be following it very closely throughout the next few months. Please let us know what you think of the trailer!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is directed by visionary filmmaker David Fincher, of Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, and Zodiac previously. The screenplay was penned by Eric Roth, of Forrest Gump, The Horse Whisperer, Spielberg's Munich, and The Good Shepherd. The film was adapted from a short story written by legendary writer F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1922. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button arrives in theaters everywhere on December 19th this Christmas.

Looks amazing. I can't wait to see it.

No doubt the film's going to be great, but that's a pretty standard trailer; far from 'a work of art'.

I have been building this film up in my head for so long now and am really excited with the first glimpse that we have been given.
If anyone is curious, the music in the trailer is the "Aquarium" movement from The Carnival of the Animals suite by Camille Saint-Saëns.

I dunno.. I apparently am the only one who thinks this movie looks awful.

I'm fascinated by this film, the eerie feeling you get while watching it, even at the end of the trailer where it show's the old woman kissing the little boy, was amazing. I've read the short story is was adapted from and it is weird and creepy and some what heart warming.

david fincher is going to win an oscar, and i think brad as well.

brad sounds ridiculous everytime he tries to pull an accent,he'll have done one great "substance" role before he dies but this is not it.Cate Blanchett looks radiant, and the set design (or what we see of it in the trailer) looks gorgeous.

The first time I saw the trailer infront of Indiana Jones it gave me chills. I think this will be the best movie of the year and win best picture at the Oscars next year, not that I have high expectations or anything.

woah
goosebumps and chills to the max
it looks absolutely incredible, and is now second after The Dark Knight as my Most Anticipated Movie of the year!
Many oscar noms it will receive…Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Make-up, and probably Best Director, and possibly Best Picture.

Anybody else think he looks like Jon Voight in the pic up above? Kinda funny or ironic or something. Don't think I need to explain why.

It is odd to say this, but I hope they don't release another trailer. There is no way they can make a second one more amazing, beautiful, and eerie as this one. This is the most perfect trailer I have ever seen.

Alex,
I don't get you sometimes, you write a long column about movie trailers showing too much of a movie…and now you're saying this trailer is the best one youve ever seen in your whole life. We saw maybe over 100 scenes in one trailer.
What's it gonna be man??

This trailer gives me chills. If there was an award for trailers (and why the hell isn't there) this one should be in the running. I love that there are only two lines spoken in the entire thing. The music is beautiful, the shots are pehnomenal, I can't wait to see this.

Sry. Dont know if it is Brad or the terrible make-up but a 70 year old Brad looks ridiculous. Reminds me of the horrid make-up they hade in Back to the Future 2.
Im gonna watch this anyway since I am a fan of FInch but I just hope Cate Blanchet doesnt make one of her patented stares into the horizon as she does numerous times in every single flick she makes.

Wow. Perfect trailer.
Saw it last night and started thinking logistically about it, and really looking forward to it. The beginning scenes with him as an old man are kinda creepy, but in a good way.
I just like the whole backwards and forwards thing. It'll be a little weird when a 9-year-old Cate Blanchett is flirting with some 81-year-old Brad Pitt, since they're both the same "age."
I really like those simple tories where you go through one's life.
Before seeing the trailer, I was thinking it would be something along the lines of "Jack" with Robin Williams, but Fincher is capable.
I think this will be epic and about the human condition.
I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a movie.
The greatest trailers of my life have only shown me glimpses of the movie.

If you ask me, the best part is that Alex believes this will also turn out to be a phenomenal film.

Mind blowing NO….interesting…YES…..
Brad Pitt kills it for me. American actors can never pull of accents as well as foriegn actors (ie Russell Crowe) and Brad Pitt is the poster boy for mediocre and incosistent performances….
I'll wait til DVD in April 09…..gross maybe 74 million US

Definitely a calling movie, looks really good. BUT, the trailer? I really really can't see where your excitement comes from when watching this trailer, much less the fact that you called a work of art; it's far from it. It's a pretty simple, standard trailer, and as usual gives too much away. Trailers should be sticking to what they were meant to be in the first place: teasers, not previews that when you go and actually see the film, you already saw half of it on the previews.

LOL … I love comments like Chantale's - "Another mainstream movie. I could not care less about Hollywood."
Then what in the HELL are you doing on a site with the tagline "Connecting Hollywood with it's audience"? If you're a troll, that's one thing, but if you actually frequent this site … wow. Go find yourself a sub-titled French "film" you douche.

Se7en, Zodiac Wow… i might sound like i've been living under a stone but i never knew the common thread untill now… the guy's brilliant… and then when u mentioned eric roth, it all made sense i can see a bit of everything from forrest gump to munich to the good sheppard in the trailer… i absolutely adore cate blanchet… i think she is one of the greatest actresses of present age… and brad pitt's acting chops have always been underestimated… this might just turn the tide in his favour… the movie look stunning really looking forward to seeing it…

I'm glad I didn't see this in the theater, because when the final scene came up, I started sobbing uncontrollably. I don't know what that was about, but that is some powerful stuff.

Although the music in the trailer is the "Aquarium" movement from The Carnival of the Animals suite by Camille Saint-Saëns.
I thought I would point out that the voices you hear singing in the middle of the piece is
a choir called Libera singing Lacrymosa.

It is completely hilarious when people state that the entire movie is laid out in the trailer. Don't we know the ending to most of the movies that we see?
It is the journey from start to finish, something called the story and or plot is what makes ithe movie intersting.
The directors and editors that are able to tell a fascinating story are the ones that make the film worth seeing (eventhough you know the ending).

Just saw a test screening last night a tthe Paramount lot. It was AMAZING. We did not know what film we were going to see until it started, so obviously we were not expecting much. Even with the standard, it's still a work in progress, sound may not be balanced, effects not finished, disclaimer before it ran, this was brilliant. It is one of the best dramas I have ever seen. The story unfolds masterfully, weaving their lives together. Everyone growing up/old except Benjamin. The isolation of age is balanced with the physical freedom of youth. I will pay to see this again. I do not tthink it is to far a stretch to say Oscar buzz.
