Helena Bonham Carter Joins McG's Terminator Reboot
June 30, 2008
by Kevin Powers
If the involvement of Christian Bale and Common wasn't enough to help lessen my worry of McG (director of the Charlie's Angels films) helming the new Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, then today's news of Helena Bonham Carter definitely will. Bonham Carter is apparently in talks to join the film, which has already begun pre-production down in New Mexico. Honestly, Tim Burton's girlfriend seems an interesting choice for the sci-fi flick, but I'm not going to hope for anyone better. Bonham Carter is a brilliant, devilishly complex creature that seems right at home amidst a post-apocalyptic earth. Having lived in Burton's world for some time, she should be used to dim lighting and harried landscapes. Unfortunately her role is not as big as you may think.
Not much is known about the petite actress' role, save for that it's rumored to be "small but pivotal." How fitting. If I had to guess, I would imagine she might play a tertiary character that assists Connor or other resistance fighters - someone living underground that has gone a bit nuts since the battle with Skynet. I can't imagine her playing a terminator, she has too great an emotional range for that, and I find it tough to imagine her a hardened Sara Connor type.
I do hope the small-ness of her role is understated though. I was pretty disappointed she didn't have more screen time in the last Harry Potter installment. Bonham Carter has such a grim, brooding quality that is always a joy to witness. If that weren't boon enough, the actress ups the quality of the film quite a bit considering she's been previously nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe. McG is definitely making some good decisions with his cast. However, he's yet to announce who will play the lead Terminator. Let's hope he scores again when that is revealed. Who do you think Bonham Carter will play?

this project sounds better and better with each news item. the addition of Bonham Carter is only a plus for this flick. it already sounds a lot better than T3 which I was pretty hyped for when it first came out, only to be letdown. with everyone involved so far, i don't see how this could go wrong.

I don't understand why everyone is calling this a reboot. Isn't it taking place after the events of Terminator 3 and showing what we've wanted to see since we saw the opening to Terminator 2? (this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=I49A09-o9ls )
Why call it a reboot? Because it has a completely different cast and no Arnold? Of course there wouldn't be an Arnold for the remaining movies as he is either not made yet or in a different place where the machines keep their manufacturing plants. A reboot would mean telling the story that happened in the first Terminator all over again with a new cast. This movie can't be a continuance / number 4 and a reboot at the same time.
Sorry for the rant… I'm definitely looking forward to Christian Bale giving this franchise a much needed kick in the arse. No longer will the Terminator be the thing people imitate and want to be for Halloween. It will be John Connor, the hero of mankind!
As long as Batman comes first on his priorities.

Well, at some point Connor has to capture an Arnold Terminator and reprogram it to send it back it time, which isn't really explained because at the beginning of T3 Connor had no skills what so ever. Couldn't he at least worked for skynet, or something.
But as far as Helena Carter, damn she's hot!

Well, given Bonham Carter's predispositions, I figure that 3 days into the shoot, she'll leave Burton and start sleeping with McG.

I think Bale and Carter can make this movie great even with McG directing. This is not going to happen without the freedom that an R rating will give the movie to use graphic scenes and language. Its Terminator not some Disney movie…help me force the studio to change their decision, join the campaign to change to R or don't see the release:

Bonham Carter is one of the most underused and understated actress' around and personally, I don't mind McG and think he will make some amazing fight sequences.

I mean, Charlie's Angels I and II weren't the best movies but it did have some kick ass scenes.

Okay.
I absolutely love Helena Bonham Carter. I think she's brilliant.
This just raised my interest in the new TERMINATOR flick.
If the script can draw the likes of Christian Bale AND Bonham Carter… maybe it's good. And not retarded, continuity ignoring rehash like "T3"
