The Wackness Wins LA Film Fest Audience Award!

We've been talking about it non-stop since seeing it for the first time back in January at Sundance, now it's finally hitting theaters this week. Jonathan Levine's The Wackness was awarded the audience award for narrative feature this past Sunday at the Los Angeles Film Festival. This is the second audience award it has won, also taking home the same award at Sundance. If this isn't yet another indication that The Wackness is a brilliant film that deserves your time this July, then I can't do anything else beyond suggesting you watch the red band trailer a few more times. And please go see it this week if you live in New York or Los Angeles!! I want this movie to be a huge success and I've been waiting for Sony Pictures Classics to put it out in theaters and give it a chance to breathe.
I'd suggest you go read my review from Sundance, but alas you probably already have and might be looking for a few more reviews to convince you it's worth it. Here's an excerpt from one of my favorites written by Nick Schager at Slant. "It's Peck, though, whose performance (as the 'most popular of the unpopular') holds the film together amid all its audio-video mannerisms and increasingly sappy developments, capturing the awkwardness of not quite fitting into high school hierarchies, the frustration of teenage desire, and the foundation-shaking post-graduation fear spawned by learning that parents are fallible at just the same moment that one is tasked with facing the unknown adult world alone."
The Wackness officially starts playing in theaters on July 3rd, so make sure to check your local showtimes. As of now, it's only showing in New York and Los Angeles, but as the film gains momentum it will hopefully expand further throughout July and August. When you finally see The Wackness, you'll see how amazing an independent film with so much spirit and so much passion can be. As much as I've criticized the marketing decisions Sony Picture Classics has made over the past few months, I love the film anyway and want to help it as much as possible. Saw this at the Glastonbury Festival on Sunday night. It really is a remarkable film. Kingsley's performance is stunning. It was a thoroughly enjoyable watch even though the digital projector kept stuttering. I'll definitely be watching this again if it ever comes out in the UK.
