Robert De Niro Hoping To Turn The Good Shepherd Into a Trilogy

Actor and now filmmaker Robert De Niro told press at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic that he would like to make two more sequels to his 2006 CIA drama The Good Shepherd. This news definitely came out of left field - I thought the film wrapped itself up neatly and we were done with it two years ago. De Niro didn't reveal any details on when these two films might start to come together, but he did reveal what they would both be about. The first would focus on the time from 1961 to 1989 while the other would follow CIA agent Edward Wilson, played by Matt Damon in the original, up to the present day. Both of these films sound like they are only in early development stages and could end up being scrapped before they see the light of day.
Released in December of 2006, The Good Shepherd went on to make only $60 million at the box office despite considerably positive reviews and a lukewarm 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. I personally thought it was a great film, but I didn't really enjoy it enough to want to pop it in my DVD player at a moment's notice. In terms of entertainment, I prefer Matt Damon as ex-CIA agent Jason Bourne in that trilogy over Good Shepherd. Plus I really couldn't ever see myself saying that a Good Shepherd trilogy is fantastic. As great as the first one was, it just doesn't have the makings of a trilogy. I really hate to say it, but De Niro should just stick with acting and leave the directing to better filmmakers. Did you enjoy The Good Shepherd? Would you want to see De Niro make a trilogy?

Good Shepherd was a great film, but I don't think I could handle two more films just like it though.
If De Niro had the skill to edit and pace his films better than I would definitely consider it but I think he should just leave the first one alone.

I wrote about the story this morning. I also wrote about him saying it in January 2007 and even before that in December 2006.
Considering he's been talking about it for almost two years, there's not a lot of progress being made. Add to that the fact that he hopes to have two more Scorsese films then we're looking at a long wait, if ever.

the good shepherd lacked many things: a good screenplay for one. and that made all the rest of it dull and uninteresting.
go ahead and make two more. i won't watch em, but they dont care most likely

De Niro was lucky The Good Shepherd being his first major project. It got attention. Now that everyone has seen the first one I hope he gets some good co-producers and a good screen writer.
Otherwise it will be just another 2 spikes in his carrear coffin

I think this movie only appeals to people who are "awake." And if you don't know what I mean by "awake," then you aren't "awake." (And no, I'm not trying to make a joke or something)
I liked The Good Shepard a lot.

i mean, don't get me wrong. there were great things IN the movie….like the acting was really good (Damon has never had a bad film, acting-wise)
but the movie itself was uninteresting, dragged out, and poorly directed

that first one was too long. If he makes the other 2 atleast 2 hours or a little over, i would watch it.

I think what this movie needed was a more extensive storyline. The first movie i liked because of its patience, and great attention to detail. However it became a tad muddled and long winded. I think a focal point story line might just revitalize a movie that otherwise. Something to work towards rather than just the trials in the life of a CIA agent.
I dont know.
I would see a 2 and 3. =D
