Diablo Cody's New Beverly Film Fest - Mondo Diablo

In about a month I'll finally be living in Los Angeles, enjoying such lavish luxuries as film festivals at the New Beverly Cinema theater in Hollywood. We've mentioned two awesome fests before, one them called The Wright Stuff with Edgar Wright, the other one featuring Eli Roth himself titled The Greats of Roth. Continuing the tradition, the New Beverly is in the midst of launching a new film festival coordinated by Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody. The fest officially started yesterday night with Thank You for Smoking and Stripes and will continue on all the way through July 24th. As always, guest appearances are very likely and Cody will be on hand to introduce most of the movies every night. If you live in LA, this is a fest you don't want to miss - she has chosen a rather appealing collection of eclectic classics.
The schedule below comes from the New Beverly Cinema's official MySpace page (via Cinematical), so head over there for more information. First show starts at 7:30PM every night. Here's the full line-up:
July 11th - 12th:

July 13th - 15th:
Labyrinth (1986) & Xanadu (1980)
July 16th - 17th:

The reason why I love these fests is because it's a chance to relive some great classics and to also explore some new territory. I of course haven't seen everything on this schedule and would love to be able to see a lot of these for the first time in an awesome theatrical environment like at the New Beverly Cinema. Once I'm out in LA, you'll probably find me frequenting the New Beverly's fests like this nearly every night. And if you're already out there in Hollywood - I hope you catch a few of these showings. One film under her belt and an Oscar statuette and she already has a film festival that she named *after herself?*
This isn't going to do much to help silence the critics that are "so over" her hipper-than-thou style.
That said, she picked some good films for the fest. I'd go if I lived out West. Sounds more like a good time hanging out and watching goofball movies than anything else.

I think she was invited to choose the films for the festival, and so they called the fest "Mondo Diablo".
Same with the other two mentioned in the article. And so it makes perfect sense to name it like that…

And wait a minute… why does this thing last 12 days?? That's longer than Sundance. For 12 movies. 12 old movies, none of which I'd rate over a B+.

If you've been to the New Beverly (my favorite theater) then you know these "film festivals" aren't film festivals in the vein of Sundance or the like, but more like recurring programs. The New Beverly has two screenings a night, each night a double feature where you can see both films for the price of one. (Sometimes they also have additional midnight screenings.)
Even when a celebrity guest isn't picking the films, it's a great place to go for older/cult/classic movies. The collected porn reels and trailers found in the New Bev attic was a particularly great show. That said, going inside the theater for the first time might turn some off, as it's the movie theater equivalent of a dive bar. But hey, I love dive bars!
Alex, when you move we're going to go all the time. I just went to Grey Gardens this week (in the "Mondo Diablo" program) and it was amazing. The world needs more places like this.
