Rumor: Top Gun 2? Goose Rolls Over in Grave! Updated!
July 22, 2008
Source: The Sun
by Kevin Powers
In covering movie news, desk-smacking, frustrating news is assured to cross your screen from time to time. Most often this is attributable to the highly combustible nature of internet news - a juicy tidbit can burn hotter than that demon thing (the Balrog) in Lord of the Rings. Remember the rumor about a Friends movie? Today is one of those days where I'm looking for the fire extinguisher. (And, yes, I realize it's ironic that I'm fanning the flames by reporting on it here.) Do we really think there will be a Top Gun 2? The Sun is reporting an "insider" has talked of a sequel to the '80s hit. Apparently, "the idea is Maverick is at the Top Gun school as an instructor — and this time it is he who has to deal with a cocky new female pilot." Am I the only one that thinks this is a positively terrible idea?
The Sun states that a script outline has been crafted, but obviously it's up to Cruise to accept. Of course, this could very well be a casual thing since I imagine "outlines" are passed around all the time. But let's not give credence to this rumor simply because other '80s franchises have been rebooted, such as Indiana Jones, Rocky, Rambo, etc. Top Gun is none of those. Not in the least. The original was great, don't get me wrong, but so much of its appeal hinged on the naivety and likability of Tom Cruise. I think most would agree, those characteristics are long gone. Highway to the danger zone!
So as the actor struggles to level out his career and public perception (his reported cameo in Tropic Thunder seems a humble effort in that vein), I can't imagine a sequel to Top Gun would be an advantageous direction. Add to that, who on earth would they get to play opposite Cruise as the cocky female? If the actor wants sign on the dotted line of irrelevance, taking on the role of a past-his-prime flight instructor is a good way to do it. Put simply, Top Gun represents a Tom Cruise of yore that the 46-year-old actor has no hope of recapturing. Do you want to see Top Gun 2?
UPDATE: Flight canceled! Access Hollywood is reporting that Paramount execs have confirmed that there is "no way" we'll see a sequel to Top Gun and that reports to the contrary are "completely untrue." So much for The Sun's "insider" and all that.

I don't think it is a horrible idea. If it does get greenlit, we'll just have to see. Tom Cruise is one of the best actors ever and could make it work. I will be there opening night if it does. Same for Valkrie, Edwin A. Salt, Tropic Thunder (not just for TC)

Wait…is there going to be a scene with all the new female pilots playing volleyball topless to some cheesy 80's song?
…And let me guess, there's going to be a scene where they invert upside down over the bad guys and instead of giving them the bird, flash them?…
…and the co-pilot's name is going to be Swan instead of Goose?…
I know April Fool's was a couple months ago, but let's hope that's what this is.
What a HORRIBLE idea.

I am actually intrigued. I really don't think Tom Cruise would want to be involved with this though. But if he was, then I have to at least believe that the script is good enough to merit him considering the role.

Top Gun is probably my all time favorite movie. I have been watching it for 18 years and I can't tell you the countless times I've contemplated a sequel; and up until about five years ago when all this crap with Tom Cruise went down I would have been on board immediately. Now, I couldn't stand it being some sort of rehabilitation vehicle for Tom Cruise. Honestly, I'd love to see a sequel that started with Maverick's funeral at sea and then have it follow Iceman or some other minor character from the original teaching at Top Gun. All that being said, if it ever happens, you bet your ass I would be in line to see that movie. I just love Top Gun too much not to be there, even knowing how much it will probably suck.

It doesn't sound like the most creative storyline I've heard, but I believe TC would only take it if the script was strong enough. He's surrounded by enough smart movie people to know whether or not this is a good move (how else has he managed to keep a career going this long?).

If this happens I might have to start making my own movies if this is the best Hollywood can do. Hollywood needs to look long and hard into a mirror before they attempt to do crap like this.

I liked the first one….back in the day, but all respect and intrest has been lost in Tom Cruise. I hope they make the movie, just so everybody else will lose respect and intrest in him too. Then maybe he will go into hiding, and we will never have to see or hear from his talentless ass again.

Hey Hollywood, this is Horribly, horribly terrible idea. Not every movie requires a sequel. Every classic does not need a reboot.
Come on, I loved the movie when it came out and I was a young teen, but let's look at it for what it is…80's CHEESE.
And what are some of you basing your assessment of Tom Cruise's acting abilities on? I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, cause you like him and it's your opinion, but I just don't see it. And I don't recall any of the major awards or critics having quite seen it either…at any rate, I wouldn't say this role is "beneath" him.

For what it's worth, wetworks, Cruise has been nominated for major acting awards in several critically-acclaimed performances. Glad you're keeping up.

First off the music is differently not as orchestrated as it use to be, they would have to go back in time and come up with pretty good music for the sequel. Don't get me wrong I love the movie but i'm afraid they would kill it with making a new one. Cruise would have to reach deep down inside and really find his inner Maverick in order to make the movie anything worth wild. I would probably go see it because i was infatuated with the first one.
I feel the need . . . the need for speed!

Update: All I can say is "WHEW!"
However - 80% The Guardian + 20% G.I. Jane might be kinda cool… maybe Ellen Page as the hot shot chick -she's got the balls. Problem is Cruise's ego is too heavy to let Page win, even if scripted.
In my personal opinion, he's evil, let's not talk about him anymore.
I.

I didn't quite say he wasn't nominated, but I can't seem to find what he's won…MTV/TeenChoice stuff not withstanding…the only performance I've seen of his that I would consider award worthy was Born on the 4th of July. His other major nominations weren't really that strong, but that Is just my opinion.
Am I saying that I hate Tom Cruise? No. But am I putting his abilities on a pedestal because he makes bank? Nope, not doing that either. Like I said, I don't think the role is beneath him…on a skill level…but it might be on an ego level.
For the record, I love Top Gun. It had a major influence on my decision to pursue the Naval Academy and, ultimately flight school.

I'd be all for this. I love Tom Cruise — no matter what goes on in his personal life, he's still a great actor. Some of his movies are among my top favorite movies ever, and Top Gun is definitely up there. I think A Few Good Men is prob. my favorite of his though. I'm actually really looking forward to his Valkyrie movie next Feb. — it's a return to the really intense drama genre, puts him back in a military (ok, military in Hitler's Germany, but still…) and back involved in conspiracies and stuff… it looks really cool to me.

Let me start by saying I love the first movie. It is still one of my all time favorites, but to even mention a sequel is one of the worst movie ideas I have ever heard. Anyone that has seen the original knows that the great part about the movie is the buddy relationship between Maverick and Gose (No, no there's two O's in Goose) I hate to say it you cant place a cocky female and expect to capture that kind of chemistry that made the original so great.

Not to nitpick, because it's not like I'm in love with the guy or anything, but he's won 3 Golden Globes, and several awards chosen by professional critics associations. As well as the MTV/Blockbuster Awards crap, and a couple of People's Choice Awards (before folks found out about his religious beliefs).

I haven't liked all his movies, but I've bought him in everything I've ever seen him in.
