Bryan Singer Producing Capeshooters for Warner Brothers

Yesterday we learned that Red 5 Comics' property ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction had been picked up for a big-screen adaptation after being on shelves less than a month. With the flurry of success this year for comic book-based movies, it seems the frenzy to snatch up the next hot thing might be ever-so-heightened. Take, for instance, the not-yet-released comic book called "Capeshooters," which was just secured by Warner Bros. Throwing money at intangible ideas is nothing new, but this does seem a tad unique when it comes to comic books. After all, the most successful ones are based on stories that have existed for a long time. But I digress. The other big news for this project is that veteran genre-director Bryan Singer (of X-Men, X2, Superman Returns; seen above) is attached, though only in a producing capacity. Capeshooters will be set up at Singer's production company, Bat Hat Harry.
The forthcoming graphic novel and movie surround "two slackers [that] become paparazzi who specialize in shooting covert videos of superheroes… [they] find themselves on the run after they stumble onto evidence that a revered superhero is actually a villain." Not at a bad storyline, and I'm encouraged by the author, Robert Liefeld. Liefeld left Marvel Comics in 1992 to help found Image Comics - the company responsible for Spawn, WildC.A.T.s, Witchblade, and a number of other off-beat, but impressive properties. Personally, Image was my favorite comic line of the '90s, so anything related to it makes me a touch happy.
However, the script is being handled by some less-known folks, namely Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin of the TV series "Anchorwoman". Huh? Apparently, the two are also "writers on Ryan Seacrest's KISS-FM morning show and also work on 'American Idol.'" That's not exactly encouraging, but I'll hold complete disdain ’til more news surfaces on the project. Questionable, as well, is whether securing Capeshooters is a consequence of Warner Bros. increasing their focus on the comic space. After all, the do seem to be getting their shit together, considering their meetings of late with DC. So what do you think of the concept?

although that sounds alright. why didn't do a spawn sequel or a reboot. Michael Jai White looks like he could do a sequel. He looked fit and shit in the dark knight.

Singer needs to go back to doing art movies before he turns into the next junk hack. The way his career trajectory is going, I expect him to turn up next doing a Reign of Fire remake. Seriously, McG has slightly more career prestige than Singer right now.
He reminds me of what happens when acclaimed foreign directors come to Hollywood and get chewed up and spit out by the studio machines. Das Boot's Wolfgang Peterson turns into Poseidon's Peterson, and Hard Boiled's John Woo slowly turns into Paycheck's John Woo. Gone is the Singer of Usual Suspects. Nowadays you get the feeling his next film will be a Star Trek: Nemesis.
