Disney Developing Monster Attack Network Adaptation
August 4, 2008
by Alex Billington
Disney has announced today via Variety that they're developing an adaptation of the AIT graphic novel Monster Attack Network. The graphic novel was written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman and was first published late last year. The story takes place on a South Pacific island where a team of first-responders rescue residents who are regularly attacked by giant monsters who emerge from the sea. Jason Netter (of "Painkiller Jane" and Wanted previously) is set to develop and produce the adaptation, which was picked up before the writer's strike even began last year. No writer or director has been announced yet. This sounds awfully similar to DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs Aliens, but I'm sure this will be live-action and have that unique Disney feel separate from that film.
If you're not familiar with the graphic novel (like me) but are curious about it, you can find them for pretty cheap over on Amazon.com. The official slightly more detailed synopsis provided is as follows:
Marvel at the Pacific island of Lapuatu, perfect in every way… except for the giant monsters. Thrill as Nate Klinger and his daring team of first-responders at the Monster Attack Network expertly deal with the frequent rampaging-beast-related crises. Wonder if the shady American industrialist who comes to the island bearing "gifts" and the mysterious, gorgeous Lapuatuan ex-patriate are up to no good. Enjoy the hair-raising adventures of the noble men and the drop-dead sexy women of the Monster Attack Network!
I still really don't exactly know what the heck this is about, but hopefully there's some quality substance to the graphic novel. Ambush Bug from Ain't It Cool News explains that it has "a real Venture Brothers feel" to it, "with overly-muscular men and sultry babes battling giant things science and nature shouldn't have spawned." However, they do say that "there's a lot of fun in between the covers of this book and it's a welcome change from some of the more serious or fact-based books," which I guess is a good sign. I'm interested, but I want to see if this is something that will be more kid focused or more comedic or straight action (like something Jerry Bruckheimer would do) first. Is anyone familiar with the graphic novel?
