Warner Brothers Developing Drink, Play, F@#k Adaptation
August 4, 2008
by Alex Billington
The title of this book, Drink, Play, F@#k, is probably enough to grab your attention, but when when you find out more about this comedy, you may genuinely be interested. The book is a response to Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir Eat, Pray, Love, which tells the story of her quest to find peace after a painful divorce by seeking culinary solace in Italy, spiritual comfort in India and a romantic respite in Indonesia. On the flip side, Andrew Gottlieb's book, which is not at all directly connected and doesn't hit bookshelves until next January, tells the story of a man seeking solace after his wife leaves him, in which he goes on a drinking spree in Ireland, takes a gambling jaunt to Las Vegas and a embarks on a sex-tourism trip to Thailand. And if that's not enough, Paramount and Warner Bros. will be going head-to-head with adaptations of each.
There's not much additional commentary to add to this news, but I since the title itself already gave me a smile, I thought I should mention it. Plus I love studio rivalries, and seeing Paramount adapt Eat, Pray, Love and now Warner Brothers adapt Drink, Play, F@#k, I smile even more with visions of marketing battles and publicity stunts. This does sound a bit like an answer to Darko Entertainment's adaptation of Tucker Max's book I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, a similar story about a guy who abandons his friends at a wedding in pursuit of "carnal interest." Unfortunately I've heard that film is pretty awful, so hopefully these two books turn out to be much more worthwhile adaptations. Anyone else interested?

Just out of curiosity, is there any information as to why you think I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell's film adaptation is "pretty awful"? I recently read the book and can see how it could be adapted into a screenplay by the author. Is it the cast/crew?

I think it'll be fun too.
And who knows, maybe a few of us will learn a thing or two ;D

I think they're on Day 14 of filming, or somewhere around there. I check back on the production blog once a week or so, there's some pretty insightful stuff in there for anyone wanting to get into movies.

Haha, sounds funny, but this doesn't necessarily mean it will get made. Hopefully the book does well enough for it to though.

The Tucker Max script leaked out a few months ago. It is VERY lame. It is unfunny, pretensious, and hostile towards anyone who isn't an entitled, upper-middle class white male. In fact, had Tucker's parents not the money to pay for his education, he'd probably find a home among skinhead Nazis.

I'm just curious as to how someone can intelligently say, "I hear a movie is pretty awful," when it's only halfway through filming?
We've all seen movies where the final product was better than the original script and vice versa, but to make a statement like that without having even seen (or even heard about) a screening seems to show quite a bias.
Reminds me of George Carlin talking about not liking certain foods when he was a kid. "How do you know you don't like it if you've never even tried it?"—–"It came to me in a dream."
