Oh Hell Yes - Superbad / Pineapple Express Crossover Movie?!

This whole idea is just a bit insane! For one, Seth Rogen is in both movies, but as different characters. Two, I don't think they were in the same city, but maybe that doesn't matter. Anyway, let's get further into this news before we start discrediting the idea entirely. Back at my Pineapple Express screening during Comic-Con, Judd Apatow mentioned in the Q&A that they might considering putting together a Superbad / Pineapple Express crossover movie where the two stories intertwine somehow. Everyone thought it was a joke, because it's such a far-fetched idea, but I looked back at Greg Mottola, who directed Superbad, who was sitting directly behind me and ask him if it was real. He just smiled and shrugged, mentioning "we'll see." Now MTV chats with James Franco and he actually confirms that they're working on it!
Franco, who may get my vote for the best on-screen stoner ever, actually clarifies the situation. He explains that Sony has been pushing for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who wrote both Superbad and Pineapple Express) to write a sequel to Superbad, however, Rogen and Goldberg don't want to actually write one. "And so, an answer to that was to do a Superbad / Pineapple Express crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work." I'll be damned, they're actually trying to make it happen! And if you're still shaking your head in disbelief and mumbling about how that could never work, Franco even goes on to pitch an idea that could work.
"I could sell them [the characters from Superbad] something, but I think we'd want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it. And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we'd have to kill one of them off." As crazy as that all sounds, it actually would work! Now that it all makes sense, the movie geek juices are flowing in my mind! I loved Superbad, my favorite comedy of last year, and I enjoyed Pineapple Express quite a damn bit, so the prospect of combining these two into one epic crossover movie sounds absolutely amazing! And I'm not just getting wrapped up in the hype here, this sounds like something that could not only be immensely entertaining but a huge hit at the box office. Who else wants to see this crossover happen?

I say why not? I don't even see a problem with Rogen playing two characters, actually. I think it would be pretty dope if Stoner Seth had to square off against Hulk Hogan-Mustached Cop Seth. Also, an interesting idea would be to swap buddies and have them have to find each other. You could have James and Jonah get separated from Chris, Michael and Seth, and make it a converging road movie. These two worlds would totally work together, especially considering that Jonah and Michael are going to different colleges (with Chris going with Michael). It would be easy to make this some kind of road movie, and a lot of fun. Just my $.02.

I was kinda made to go see Superbad. Much to my dismay. But I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. And I can't wait to see Pineapple Express this weekend. I can totally see a crossover movie here. I would love to see where this goes.

It might be just because I'm high right now (prepping for PE) but that sounds like the best idea ever, like in all the history of life.

oh fucking lord, no..not more superbad bullshit PLEASE!
Pineapple Express is the only film I've ever wanted to see Seth Rogen in, don't taint my love for Pineapple Express with that lame ass superbad.

Please do not bring that fat Superbad kid to any movie. The only thing he does is to say word fuck in different ways. Cant stand him.

They wouldn't have to kill off his cop character. They could just not have him in it.

I'm up for it. It would be a huge box office hit if all the characters from the those two films reprise their roles. Might as well toss in some other Apatow Company productions while they're at it.

great idea….both Superbad and Pibeapple Express take place in "Clark County" , probably something significant to rogen and Goldberg wen they wrote the two movies….Rogen has stated that Superbad was originally inspired by Kevin Smith's movies which have no filter when it comes to curse words, so why not connect his movies as Smith frequently does? it could allow this to actually be a believable story, and Saul Silver + McLovin = tons of laughs and $$$$…we all know the studios are concerned about the latter

I disliked SUPERBAD somewhat but LOVED PINEAPPLE so them two together = sub-par???????

This sounds so crazy that it might work.
It's almost guaranteed to be a hit because they would be combining fans of both movies and if they landed all the actors again that would equal big bucks!
Could they maybe say that Seth Rogan's characters in both films are twin brothers? that would be kinda cool!

Would there be any possible way to incorporate Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, or Forgetting Sarah Marshall? then it would be the ultimate Judd Apatow EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!

just saw pineapple express and it was great. you can solve the seth rogen problem if they just say that the cop in superbad quit his job and became a process server in pineapple express or something like that- it could probably work.

saw pineapple, and it was awesome. If they combined with superbad, that would be awesome and seth rogen can play both roles if he has to. It has been done before lol
Also Alex, i was watching tv and i saw a tv spot for babylon a.d., just to let you know lol

You know I wasn't a huge fan of Superbad. I thought it was hilarious, but how hard is it to be funny when every other scene is basically a sentence long adjective laced with profanity used to describe getting laid? But what makes this idea a good idea is the fact that the cops in Superbad were kind of the worst part for me, so I wouldn't mind seeing them get killed off and being replaced by the guys from Pineapple Express.
Plus, I don't think there's an idea too stupid for this team. These guys literally take shit and turn it into gold on film. They're comedy Mitas right now, and they're smart enough to pull off a crossover comedy like this. In a way the characters in the films are already cross overs because Rogen plays the same guy in every movie, as do Hill and Rudd when they're around….so crossing the stories shouldn't be that hard considering that we find these guys hilarious no matter what they seem to be doing.

Let him play both characters…they could be brothers…it could work.
I'm not the biggest fan of Superbad, but the crossover idea has some interesting potential.

i think the idea is so crazy it could work. also, you can either not use Seth's cop character, or say they're brothers, or, for hilarity, have the two characters fulfill the saying that we all have a twin somewhere.
throwing in other movies would be bad, if done for more than a coffee shop cameo (40 year old virgin sitting getting breakfast, with his kids!)

i see that superbad is gettin a lot of hate towards it, which i cant possibly understand. its funny how all us teens say that superbad is hands down funnier than knocked up, while all of the adult critics give the nod to the more mature but less funny knocked up
anyways a crossover movie could work, but arent the guys in superbad supposed to be graduating from high school?? where in the movie would they be sold pot and you u have to get them out of trouble, doesn't make sense. they should just make a sequel where they graduate and are going into their first years of college. it could be called "supergrads" i know its corny but…
they could have it where the pineapple express was kind of a flashback and now seth rogaine is currently a cop, becuz it doesn't look ike he did much work to become a cop in superbad, and i don't thin kthey ever mentioned his name in superbad, so they can call him officer denton in the crossover…just a thought

if they can make it work i am so in loved both of the films, if done right it could be an epic film!

what's wrong with having both characters of seth rogen in the movie? One's a cop with a stash, the other is slightly more clean cut. They can even have a moment where they're both high and see each other for the first time and start trippin out cuz they look alike.

The "McLovin'" character was the only thing I liked about Superbad.

Why do they have to kill off Seth's cop character? That isn't necessary at all. Just let him play both
David on Aug 8, 2008

They could let him play both, but there's really no need to have the cops in the movie….unless it's just for a brief moment. In Superbad they were merely prop characters used to push the plot along. Personally I didn't think they were that great a characters to begin with, and while I thought they were funny….I think they bogged the film down in parts. I think they should have edited some of their parts out. It just got redundant after awhile.
But they would be an interesting pair to have in a movie about pot, and as a few have mentioned above the part where both Rogan's see each other for the first time would be hilarious.

PineEx was awesome. a crossover would be pretty interesting. seth can always play both characters. but if seth and judd isn't writing it, would it still be as good as the seperate originals?…

first half of Pineapple Express was about half as good as Knocked Up; the second half was almost as bad as Freddy God Fingered
