Worth Watching - Aug 8: Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky Trailer

Miramax has debuted the trailer for Mike Leigh's new comedy Happy-Go-Lucky. This cheerful little film is about the boisterous and carefree Poppy, played by the bright up-and-coming actress Sally Hawkins, and the lack of romance in her life. Apparently Happy-Go-Lucky is a film festival sensation, but I haven't heard of it until now, so I'm not sure how big of a sensation it was. However, it is the latest from British filmmaker Mike Leigh, of films like Life Is Sweet, Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy, and Vera Drake. I think the fact that the title card in this trailer is pink and sports cherries might mean that this is not exactly a guy's movie… by any means. However, if you're brave enough to watch it, you're more than welcome!

Happy-Go-Lucky is both written and directed by British filmmaker Mike Leigh, of High Hopes, Life Is Sweet, Naked, Secrets & Lies, Career Girls, Topsy-Turvy, and Vera Drake previously. The film first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival back in February this year and has gone on to numerous other film fests. Miramax is currently releasing Happy-Go-Lucky in limited theaters starting on October 10th.

I saw this lovely little movie when it was realeased here in Amsterdam a few months ago. I'm a big fan of Mike Leigh and this movie is quite wonderful. It's filled with memorable characters and situations. I was especially impressed by the work of Eddie Marsan, who plays an unforgettable driving instructor. And it's really not a girls movie, even though it seems the US marketing might be trying to position it in that way.
Girls and guys: go see!

I have seen it here in the cinema in The Netherlands a while ago.
While having some interesting things in it, the overal feeling was it annoyed the hell out of me.
The parts where she's learning how to drive from Eddie Marsan are hilarious, though.

I usually don't comment much on a star's looks (notice how I've never said anything about that horsey chick from Sex and the City alone? DOH!), but there should be a rule that before a British actor tries to Make It Big they should have to come to the States for a bit of dental work first.

I saw the film last night in France where it has just been released as 'Be Happy' and loved it and have thought about it a lot since. It's about the reality of really accepting and living ones life, and making the choice to be happy.
Poppy (Sally Hawkins), the protagonist, at first comes across as daffy and irritating, and my heart sank as I mistakenly thought it was going to be a superficial film. In hind-sight I compare and contrast it to Amelie and There's Something About Mary in that it is about a single woman with a seeming naive character, facing the daily problems and delights of life. Poppys' personality is cheerful and zen.She has a job she loves, she has friends, she does not grieve over her single status, she gets on with things. When her bike is stolen she decides that instead of replacing it she will take up driving lessons, and this brings her character into side-by-side contrast with her driving instructor (Eddie Marson) who is an up-tight sociopath. This gives the film some of it's best comedy scenes, and also it's one most frightening.
This is definately not a Romantic Comedy- Poppy does Meet a Man but it is charmingly shown to be merely part of her life among other things..it may be something that supposedly progresses after the film is finished, but the audience aren't led to be too worried about it one way or the other.And how healthy that feels!!
There is a touching scene with a street tramp, which inspires a lot of thought, and some doubt about the wisdom of Poppys kindness and humanity.. she gets away with it this time but….
And, should Sally Hawkins ever read this web-site, 'please leave your teeth as they are'. She looks as real, lovely and natural as Hollywood never made.
For me this is Mike Leighs' most enjoyable since Secrets and Lies.
