Cryptozoo Crew Graphic Novel Being Adapted by Alcon
August 16, 2008
by Alex Billington
The latest graphic novel to get the Hollywood treatment is Cryptozoo Crew, written by Jerry Carr and Allan Gross and published by NBM. Unfortunately, it sounds more like a kids cartoon more than anything, but take a look for yourself. Cryptozoo follows a member of a secret organization charged with protecting the identity of strange and rare animals classified as Cryptids, who teams with a beautiful doctor in a quest to protect a one-of-a-kind species from falling into the wrong hands. The screenplay is being adapted by Joe Gazzam of the upcoming Scared Straight and 21 Jump Street. No director has been attached yet, but project is being developed at Alcon Entertainment within Warner Brothers.
The comic series was first published in 2005 by NBM Publishing. You can tell from the cover as well, but Cryptozoologist Tork Darwyn and his wife Tara encounter creatures like yetis, thunderbirds and other strange and exotic creatures. I'm only slightly interested in this whole thing to begin with, but I'm curious whether it will be something PG oriented for kids or something like Land of the Lost aimed at older generations. If you're curious about the series or potentially want to pick up some copies to add to your comic collection, you can head over to: CryptozooCrewOnline.com. We'll be keeping our eye on this project as it develops. Hopefully they pick a solid director and hopefully the story turns out entertaining.

if they do a series and change the creature each time like sasquatch first, loch ness, second,so on and so forth, and make it either pg13 or r it could be a really great franchise

I actually work at at a competing studio and read Gazzam's Jump Street script — it was really, REALLY good. Given that he also wrote "Scared Straight" which I've not read, but hear is great — I have high hopes for the project. And chances are, the script will depart quite a bit from the graphic novel — they often do.
