Ben Affleck Joins Mike Judge's Extract Comedy
August 20, 2008
by Alex Billington
Ben Affleck is acting again. He joins Mike Judge's latest film Extract, which stares Jason Bateman as a flower extract plant owner dealing with workplace issues and a stream of bad luck, including his wife's affair with a gigolo. No, Affleck will not be playing the gigolo, instead he'll be playing an ambulance-chasing lawyer. With Bateman, Affleck, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, and Clifton Collins Jr. all part of Extract as well, it's starting to sound a lot more like an ensemble comedy than anything purely focused on Bateman's character. Shooting starts in Los Angeles next week and the film will be a Miramax release, meaning it will hopefully have more studio support than Judge's other disastrous film, Idiocracy.
Clifton Collins Jr, of Traffic, Capote, and "Thief", who was also announced today, plays a factory worker who loses a body part in a freak accident and is now due for a huge settlement. Last year Affleck showed us that he's vastly better at directing (with Gone Baby Gone) and working behind the camera than starring in front of it, but if Judge is able to use him effectively in Extract, then it might not be so bad. Judge both wrote and is directing. The concept sounds like he's going back to his Office Space roots and the cast sounds great as well. I'm anxious to find out more details about the story and hear whether it could be another Mike Judge classic in the makings. Do you think Affleck is a worthy addition to Extract?

I wouldn't call Idiocracy "disastrous" I thought it was a decent movie and enjoyed it. Definitely isn't a disaster.

Idiocracy was the worst comedy I've ever seen, I'd even out the love guru above it.

Affleck just plays smart-ass Affleck in every movie!

Eh, leave it or take it. Hopefully Kristen Wiig has a large part though because she is always a scene stealer.

No offense, but where the hell do you get off saying that Idiocracy was disastrous.
It was f-ing hilarious, unique, and above all, a good introspective of the American idiot. I think it was clever, and you must not have a funny bone in your entire body if "disastrous" is the sole word you would use to describe it.
Harsh, man. Harsh…
…and utterly wrong.

#3 and #9- I totally agree with you Idiocracy was great. For all the "dumb" humor in it, it was one of the smarter comedies I have seen.A great social commentary on the decaying intellect of the american society. Most people who only saw the "stupid" humor are the POINT the movie was making. Anyways, I think Ben will be fine in Extract. I always liked him more when he is being funny as opposed to serious. The rest of the cast Awesome!

I feel bad for Affleck. There's no way he can change his image or reinvent himself. Challenging rolls, umf, indie gems, naw, HE's BEN AFFLECK.

I always kinda enjoy Affleck. I honestly believe the man could crap a gold and platinum brick and everyone would just yell at him for doing it on the rug. He can't win.
If Idiocracy was a failure its because it got 0 support from the studio. You bury a film and guess what? NO ONE WATCHES IT! That was a decent movie that marketed correctly could have at least broken even and probably made a decent profit on DVD. I dunno if Fox is just against making money or doesn't know how to anymore. Its almost like they've been watching there own reality TV so long that they don't have the attention span to follow through on anything.

"I like money" & I loved this flick, come on guy, I think you are being slightly pretentious and overly critical of this film and the actors, Dax, Luke, and Maya were spot on! Mike Judge has done it again and I will continue to watch and support his work because it has "Electrolytes", it's what I crave!!!!
