Vin Diesel Promises Two More Chronicles of Riddick Movies

Chronicles of Riddick

Vin Diesel is definitely the biggest news of the day. Not only did we run his new Fast and Furious trailer, but his other film, Babylon A.D., got an article discussing its problems with Fox. Now we add some more news from the man himself into the mix. Diesel spoke with MTV recently and told them that he is indeed already working on making two more Chronicles of Riddick movies. When that film hit in 2004, it was setup to be a trilogy, but it had a poor run at the box office and now its been 4 years since we've even heard it mentioned again. Diesel is hopeful that it will be back anyway and is working on a script with David Twowy. "Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I'm always working on it."

David Twowy wrote and directed both The Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black and is indeed currently writing two more new scripts. "The only question is whether we take a page from the Lord of the Rings guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind." As for where it might head, "sooner or later we all end up in the Underverse" is all that Diesel said. This falls in line with a report from 2005 that the second film would head to the Underverse while the third would conclude with a return to Furya, Riddick's home world. This might lead to an epic conclusion, but with a mediocre introduction with Chronicles of Riddick, I don't think anyone will be too excited for another two movies (except for me).

So why does Diesel say it's taking so long if it wasn't the bad box office? "It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it." He's right about that - Pitch Black was released in early 2000 and Chronicles of Riddick was released in mid 2004, almost five years apart. Pitch Black is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies that I can always revisit, but Chronicles of Riddick fell apart as a sequel. I really wasn't that entertained and didn't care if they made a trilogy or not. If Twowy can pull of something amazing, though, I'm still interested - because Diesel's Riddick is a character than I can never get enough of, no matter how bad the movie. Thoughts?

I enjoyed both movie i dont no what everyones beef with Chronicles of Riddick was i thought it was a great movie, not as good as Pitch Black but still enjoyable. Im all in for Riddicks return been waiting for sometime.

Pitch Black was a really cool sci-fi survival horror movie, and Riddick was a decent action movie. If he's gonna play a brooding pissed off guy, I'd rather it be in space with a lot of cool shit going on around him.

4

YES, I love Richard B Riddick! Man I cant wait, I loved Pitch Black, it was genius, Chronicles was also very cool, the uncut version made it make more sense with the vision of his Furyian heritage etc, yeah it could have been better, but WTF if Steven Spielberg would have had his name on it it would have been a masterpiece but since it was Twothy, it gets a bad rap. Whatever, I think that the Riddick movies outshine some other high profile "sci-fi" directors and writers by leaps and bounds.

Even the Video game was cool as shit, I don't even have an Xbox anymore but I have the game still, I should go pick up the PC version for my collection. The cartoon was mildly enjoyable as well, although I think that it was more of an afterthought.

I will support these movies to their conclusion and I think Vin Diesel will to no matter what "Hollywood" has to say about it.

Uh, Chronicles of Riddick wasn't a prequel lol, did you even watch both movies or are you just talking crap?

Chronicles of Riddick took place years AFTER the events of Pitch Black.

Since when Chronicles is a prequel?

Sadhu on Aug 25, 2008

I didn't like Chronicles of Riddick but Pitch Black rocked. Perhaps they need to go back to a smaller scope like PB it almost seems like they over shot it with Chronicles. Although that was a pretty cool way Chronicles ended (open-ended wise) :)

sweet i can't what! and escape from butcher bay(the game) is a prequel not chronicles.

Wooops crap, you guys were right, it was a sequel after Pitch Black… For some odd reason I though I remember hearing that it was a prequel and that's what I had thought in my mind. Sorry - lack of sleep is screwing me up… You guys were right and I fixed it above. :)

pitch black was a great movie and one of my favorite sci fi's, chronicles fell flat but i think theyll be able to fix their mistakes from chronicles and pull of two badass sequels

Can someone tell me what they didn't like about Chronicles? I really liked it.

Richard on Aug 25, 2008

Yeah I agree with #11
What was so bad about it?
Did we even see the same movie?
The one I watched was insanely badass…

I really enjoyed them. If they can't be made live action, vin should produce some kind of Riddick anime series out of it to finish.

Riddick is a terrible character, I'll pass on these two movies.

Brad on Aug 25, 2008

riddick was awesome. hands down this is one of the greatest characters i've seen, compared to other characters from different genres. forget the box office, once its good and fans love it feel free to make another. forget the critics as well.

Darrin on Aug 25, 2008

16

Riddick has so many homosexual undertones. Even the name Rid-dick. I'm surprised more people didn't pick up on that from the first one.

Dustyman1505 on Aug 25, 2008

17

Chronicles may not have been the best movie ever, but I think the visual and artistic design, as well as the fight scenes were absolutely stunning. It may not have had the clearest story, but the direction wasn't bad, the story was alright, and the acting wasn't terrible. I enjoyed it quiet thoroughly. I look forward to the next two films.

Chronicles of Riddick is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've never posted on this board, read the site all the time, but I had to comment on this. I absolutely loved Riddick. The scene where he takes on the group of guards is amazing. I have been waiting for this and I'm super excited.

22

Those who loved Riccdick sure know what SCI-FI films are about. I loved 'Chronicles of Riddick' and the ending was a nod to 'Conan the King'. A feared warrior who sits on the throne. Diesel likes 'D&D' and Conan. 2 more movies. freaking awesome. Hail to the Furion. Diesel & Twohy, you both ROCK!

Shawn Gregory on Aug 25, 2008

23

I think CoR is very underrated, much like Starship Troopers was. It takes time for some movies to find their place in the pantheon of cinematic greatness, but Chronicles (and PB) are excellent SF movies. Good SF fare is few and far between, so I am looking forward to more Riddick. Visually, there hasn't been a better looking SF film since Blade Runner.

Riddick Rocks on Aug 25, 2008

24

Pitch Black is absolutely one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. But what made it so great was the tight core of characters and the chemistry between Diesel and Radha Mitchell.

Chronic on the other hand was flat and uninspiring. Most of the characters are half-baked and not very interesting (by most I mean every single one except Riddick and to a lesser extent Thandie Newton). The biggest disappointments were Kyra, who did nothing except whine and get dragged around by Riddick, and Lord Marshal, who is just some pompous and boring middle-aged guy without his Underverse powers. Epic movies that don't take the time to develop the main antagonist always makes for a lame show — as Darth Vader or the Joker will tell you. Finally they definitely could have gotten someone much younger and hotter than Judi Dench to play Aereon the Elemental, since her role was so minimal and requires very little acting ability anyway.

So this is what I want for the next Chronic — more eye candy, more explanation of the random plot lines, more character development, and a bad guy worthy of Riddick.

Moebius on Aug 25, 2008

25

I love Pitch Black but Chronicles of Riddick is boring and confusing (because I was never interested enough to follow what was happening).

I wish they would make Pitch Black sequels instead. Like…have some…uhh…space pirates or something hire or kidnap Riddick and take him back to the bug planet to get them something important from a ship that crash landed on the planet sometime after the events of Pitch Black.

Viper on Aug 25, 2008

26

Definitely one of my favorite series. Pitch Black was freakin' amazing, CoR was ok but I think they tried a bit too hard with that one. I hope that they're serious and actually go through with making more. If you haven't played the game yet I would suggest you try it.

quigonjames on Aug 26, 2008

27

I didn't see Pitch Black until TCOR came out and I heard it was a prequel, and I was blown away by Riddick. Went to see TCOR knowing it was a completely different type of film (Not a monster movie, and big budget etc) and liked it, but when it came out on DVD it was much easier to understand because you had the advantage of reading up on the necro mythology and using the Riddick insider feature and other things. It flows really well then, and the Directors Cut is even better! Judi Dench is an absolute legend, and to have her in a film, as well as Colm Feore, Karl Urban and Thandie Newton, with a so-called 'terrible' actor as Vin just shows actually how good he actually is. (Check out some of his earlier stuff if you don't believe me, or try 2006's 'Find Me Guilty'.)

I think they (Twohy and Diesel) got too excited about the universe they were creating and got a little carried away, and had no one to rein them in. Hopefully they will on the next production, as I am so excited about this news as I have been waiting for 4 years for an update!

lnu00lc on Aug 26, 2008

28

Wow you have no idea how excited this makes me!!! Pitch Black and Chronicles are some of my favourite movies, ones that I just grab whenever I need a pick me up. Movies like this really are not aimed at my demographic and I never saw them at the theatre although I have them on DVD. Hopefully the sequels will continue with the arse-kicking Riddick awesomeness!! I dont know why people hate on them so much - my friends think I am nuts.

I'm levitating with excitement! The Riddick series is one of my all time favorites probably second only to the Alien series. And I LOVED the Peter Chung animated short Dark Fury! It bridged the gap between Pitch Black and Riddick I very elegantly. The world is ready for Riddick II and so are the fans, bring it on!

I am going to agree with everyone…this is a site to discuss movies and our thougths so why does no one ever explain why they hated the first one?! I loved the artistic style of TCOR and the story line. It's really the only movie I like from Disel. He def needs to stay in the Sci-Fi world and stop making Disney movies for kids -.-

I loved both of them. My husband and I are DEFINATELY looking forward to it. Very nice… since when we first heard the trailer for Babylon A.D. it sounded like a Riddick movie and then… wasn't one. :P

33

It still amazes me to this day how many people scratch only the surface of some films. Chronicles had an incredible depth and consistency throughout. The attention to detail was astonishing as well as the 'realism' (have you seen many sci-fi movies where someone actually swithced a damn 'hover mode' button?) Little bits and pieces like that added to the immersion factor of the film. Ok it might not be the Citizen Kane of the Sci-fi but who cares? Riddick is a work of love for both Mr. Twowy and mr. Diesel and it shows. I strongly believe that there is a great number of fans out there than just waits for the trilogy to be completed. We will be here to support their efforts.

"Riddick, I thought you said it was clear!"
"No, I said it looked clear."
"Well how's it look now?"
"Looks clear…"

Best line ever :o)

Peloquin on Aug 26, 2008

35

Also remember TCoR also got some of its thunder taken away from the studio exes too, the story was better, more detailed and they were made to make it shorter, less story more action, I dont blame Twothy or Diesel for that, I blame the movie studios, I think this universe is rich and full of greatness.

Richard on Aug 26, 2008

36

Pitch Black was a beat-perfect sci-fi thriller, and Chronicles was a great actioner … do we have a war movie coming in these sequels? I hope so. Riddick is a great character - dark, twisted, brutal but with an innate humanity that drives him forwards. With Twowy and Vin both protecting the franchise I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next chapter. Bring on the Underverse!

mrbobbyboy on Aug 26, 2008

37

HELL YEAH! I love Riddick and I was praying there would be more movies coming out! Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black are one of my favorite movies because Riddick is such an awesome character. I don't care what anyone else says, I can watch those movies all the time.

andrew on Aug 26, 2008

38

It's only right that such a fine actor (possibly, g.o.a.t.) rightfully receive a trilogy for his accomplishments.

Naysayers can eat their hearts out.

This is Vindication.

I thought Pitch Black was Awesome, Riddick follow-up was Good but Not Great, but in my opinion the Riddick Character is 1 of the absolute Best Bad Asses in the Universe (without Super Powers). Psyched for the next 2 installments, Good or Bad.

He does have superpowers tho, well like Furyian powers lol.

w00t! Chronicles of Riddick was an amazing sci-fi ride. And they're going to make more! Fantastic.

They need to keep the budget decent, however, and not let the franchise go the way Starship Troopers has (direct-to-video).

Rijkaad on Aug 26, 2008

43

His eyes are not from Menthol Cools, play the video game!

Richard on Aug 26, 2008

44

Vin Diesel has all the charisma of a dirty ashtray…I cant believe they are going to dump $$$ down the drain on more of this sh*t….

moldybread on Aug 26, 2008

45

Richard (#43): his eyeshine DOES come from the Menthol Cools… the videogame sequence (where Riddick basically gets his eyeshine given to him by a crazy old preacher) was edited for the sake of gameplay.

And remember in PB, when Riddick's talking to Jack? He tells him/her that to get eyeshine like his you need to pay a doctor 20 Menthol Cools, or something to that effect.

Also watch the animated short downloadable from the PB website: there's a panel or two where you actually see Riddick hand over the packet of Menthols to the doctor…

AV on Aug 26, 2008

46

No he visits a doc and the doc stitches him up from being injured and he pays him with KOOLs the shine was from something else:

The video game (which serves as a prequel to Pitch Black), clarifies that Riddick's eyeshine is more than just something he picked up in a prison. After helping a character called "Pope Joe" retrieve his "blessed voice box," a radio that picks up religious programming, Riddick goes into a den to get stitches for an injury. After he is finished receiving stitches, Joe tells him how to escape, and, perhaps coincidentally, warns Riddick not to "trust his eyes"; at that moment, a ghostly voice informs him that Riddick has "been blind for far too long…so I'm going to give you a gift …" It is at this moment that Riddick receives his eyeshine.

We watched Pitch Black when I was pregnant with my son in 2001 and loved it and the character name Riddick so a few months later Riddick Jay was born! :) We also liked Chronicles and eventhough I am not a huge action fan I was really into it, I bought the trilody DVD release with the animated movie on it and when my son gets alittle older (is now 6) I'll let him watch them, that would be so cool if he makes two more movies, I really thought that were good and didn't know why it didn't do so great in the theaters, I really wanted to get my hands on a movie poster for my son, but could find one. :( I thought the story line was provoking and it has alot of depth to it not just an action flick.

Chronicles of Riddick absolutely kicked ass.
As others have mentioned the attention to detail can truly be seen, just look at the exhaust from the necromonger ships. I really really liked the movie and am very happy to hear that vin is going to do more of the series. I just hope they get enough funding to do it to the same level of quality that they had in C.O.R.

iDavid on Aug 27, 2008

51

Yeah iDavid, the details in the CGI were Lord of the Ring quality !!!

The video game is awesome.
Beating it was cool as the enviroments looked real sci-fi at the end.
The game play was some of most addictive at the time. Who knew a jail game would be fun.

These two movies were good but I enjoyed Chronicles more than I did Pitch Black. None the less, here's hoping they do produce more Riddick movies. No more animation movies please.

Stoneaxe on Aug 28, 2008

53

The thing people forget is that PB was basically a horror fantasy movie where the Chronicles are more in the way of being more sci fantasy. Loads of people went in to see the Chronicles thinking it was going to be another PB. The storyline of the Chronicles rocked and am waiting for the rest of the story!!

Fawn on Aug 30, 2008

I liked all the movies! They didn't really come out the way they should have, but as an avid fan of the storyline, I can not wait for the other movies. I don't understand who didn't like the movies?? I've come across so many people who rant and rave about it non-stop so who are the pople that didn't like it?

Actually, what you don't hear is that there is a trilogy DVD set released, but the 3rd movie on that DVD set is a cartoon with Diesel's voice playing Riddick.

Riddick is one of my all time favorite (anti-)hero characters (of course right up there with Ellen Ripley). Those two together would make some tough kids! I love the Riddick movies, and enjoyed the Riddick sequel. I'm dying for more. Vin Diesel has truly brought that character to life. On a side note, I wish they would bring him back for another Triple X movie. He rivals James Bond in my book, and I consider myself a James Bond fan, as well.

I loved Chronicles of Riddick as much as Pitch Black - just heard about the possible 2 sequels last week from another Riddick fan and am very excited.

Most romatic scene of all time - when Riddick douses himself with water, grabs a rope and saves Kyra from getting burned up (steam coming off of his body afterwards!!). I get goose bumps every time I see that scene (have wathced the movie at least 10 times - it is up there with Blade Runner as far as I'm concerned).

Two excellent Sci-Fi's - I'm a big fan of the Riddick character and would love two more Chronicles of Riddick… Interesting that each of Riddick's ladies dies… bet Abu 'Imam' al-Walid daughter is fully grown and plays a role in the next feature… She grows up to avenge her father death by the Necromongers!
