George Clooney Joins Jason Reitman's Up in the Air

The first casting announcement for Jason Reitman's next film, Up in the Air, has hit today. George Clooney is in talks to star in the film as Ryan Bingham, a frequent traveler pursuing his millionth frequent flyer mile in his last week in employment with his company. For me at least, this is the highly anticipated follow-up to Juno for Reitman. I'm a huge fan of Reitman and was excited to hear that Up in the Air would be his next film - and now with Clooney potentially attached, this is on is way to being a mainstream hit, or so I hope. Reitman has compared Up in the Air to Thank You for Smoking but for the corporate world - and I can't wait to see it! Clooney's addition only further solidifies my high hopes for this adaptation.
As we first announced back in May, Up in the Air is an adaptation of Walter Kirn's book of the same name. Reitman once said of the film that "most of the time, in a movie, it's about a guy and at the beginning he's lonely, and he thinks he has it all and he meets a girl and she changes everything… this is not that movie." Reitman first picked up the book years ago and has been developing the script while working on Thank You for Smoking and Juno. I expect great things from him with Up in the Air, which says a lot because Reitman has consistently (with two movies so far) done a fantastic job and I expect another hit with Up in the Air. Honestly, Clooney seemed a bit old to me for the character, but in the end I think he'll be the right fit.

I have to say I don't really understand Clooney's career as he runs it like he's back in the 1960's. Clooney's best work in my opinion is still that of Dr. Ross on NBC's ER. While its fine to do the middle of the road stuff that has an ok appeal to the main stream masses I don't understand why he doesen't attach himself to more films like the Perfect Storm. While he is considered a star I really think his overall career would have been magnified greatly if he would have starred in the remake of Planet of the Apes (with a better script of course) and I am Legend. I guess Im saying he should have went the Charlton Heston route. I feel like a terrific talent has been limited by his choices overall and that's a shame because I really like him.
