Edgar Wright Talks About Adapting Issues of Scott Pilgrim

Our favorite British geek/filmmaker Edgar Wright has chimed in with an update on Scott Pilgrim vs the World via Wizard. For those who are unfamiliar, Scott Pilgrim is an adaptation of a comic book that's currently in the middle of its run. Wright has been working directly with writer Bryan Lee O'Malley to put together the screenplay for the film before the final issues of the comic are out, even inspiring certain lines in the comic. It is officially Wright's next film, which follows Hot Fuzz from last year, and is going into production this fall with Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring. Wright talks with Wizard about the locations in the comic as well as adapting the six issues into one film.

There aren't too many juicy details coming out of this update, but I always love hearing filmmakers talk about their upcoming projects so openly because it shows that they're passionate about it. And this time Wright gives a great update on the behind-the-scenes work up in Toronto with O'Malley.

"We've been doing a lot of work on it in a conception level and getting into casting and crew and stuff. In the number of times I've been to Toronto, one of the most amazing things about Bryan's artwork is that it all refers to real locations. All of the locations in the book he took, maybe even sometimes there's a chain restaurant, like, a Pizza Pizza in Toronto that's a specific branch that he's taken a photo of. Just last month I took some sort of the crew around, like, the Scott Pilgrim locations and it's an amazing thing to take one of the books and say, "Hey, there it is!" You know, and especially where it's essentially very non-descript locations that Bryan has taken photographic reference for and there and lo and behold is the place!"

The latest issue of Scott Pilgrim currently on shelves is #3, which leaves 3 more to go. As for whether they're adapting them individually or working them all into one, Wright says that "the script that we've written essentially covers all six." He adds that "it's very much in the spirit of Bryan's books and certainly in terms of the first and second books there are whole sections that are straight from the books but then it slightly takes on its own momentum and kind of pace." This may be one of the rare productions where the movie and comic book compliment each other perfectly because they were developed so closely together. I'm personally anxious to see this go into production and will be following it as they gear up to start shooting.

I still don't know why people like Michael Cera? All he does is stand there and look nerdy. He's very plain and boring as an actor yeah people love him.

Actually Volume 4, "Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together," was released last November. Each volume gets better and better. I know Edgar will knock this one out of the park, as he's done with everything else. The two actors they've casted are pretty spot-on, in my opinion. I'm very excited. This is looking like it's going to be an extremely entertaining movie.

Know that edgar wright is great and all
but still have doubt about this adaptation
not that it would ruin my experience of the book but i want the film to exube the same feelings
