Indie Filmmaker Max Makowski Directing Voltron?!

Just weeks after we announced that the Voltron movie was dumped by Fox, our friends at Latino Review have discovered who will be directing the latest iteration. Max Makowski, who directed a 2005 Sundance film called One Last Dance and is currently working on the Kung Fu redux for Warner Brothers, will be helming Voltron. An odd choice? Maybe so, but Latino Review says that Max "is supposed to have a great visual style that's very specific and all his own," which should be a good thing. Other than that, not much is known about him, besides that he's got some potential and had a Sundance movie that caused some buzz.
As much as we wish that Makowski will be the next Jon Favreau who is going to take Voltron and turn it into the movie that we dreamt of as a kid, I just can't see it happening. The whole project sounds a bit weak to begin with. Although early script reviews of Justin Marks' screenplay have been very positive, I'm not sure Makowski will be the big-budget action-film director this needs to stand up to the likes of Transformers and Iron Man. I will definitely give Makowski a chance to prove me wrong and show me that Voltron will kick ass, but for now I remain hesitant. If anyone has seen his Sundance film One Last Dance or is familiar with any of his work, let us know. Do you think Makowski will be able to pull it off?

If you're working on something big, then you must have the experience in order to create a good product. Jon Favreau had a shitload of experience before taking on ol' Shellhead.
Makowski might pull it off if he has very talented people at his side to bring his vision to life.

forget voltron. people would think that the movie would be a rip off of transformers. if the studio really wants to get the little children to run crazy like how high school musical have them, reboot the fucking power rangers. Everyone who was young around those times saw it and they loved every minute, and don't deny it.

No on Voltron. It'll be cheesed up. I can't see it as a movie, ever. The producers will pidgeonhole it into a Transformers remake.
Voltron is about two planets battling one another, and I'll bet the script has everything set on Earth. A robeast will be trashing up New York, like Cloverdale. And they'll have robeast buried under the Earth, planted by Zoltar, like in War of the Worlds. Or Alien vs Predator– Another example of when NOT to bring something that should be set in space and on another planet, but brought to Earth by weak-willed screenwriters. Cheese!

Makowski is very certainly a highly talented director. One Last Dance is overall a nice film, but the general opinion was very split about it, as it has some jarring shifts in tone. But it also demonstrates his ability as a director and writer. The thing is just, I don't think Makowski is suited for this big budget popcorn thing.
