Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz Working Together Again
September 2, 2008
by Alex Billington
Actress Penelope Cruz and filmmaker Pedro Almodovar previously worked together on the highly acclaimed film Volver, among a few others, and now they're at it again. Broken Embraces, which just got picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics, is the latest film the two are doing together. Written and directed by Almodovar, the film is described as an amour fou (passionate love) involving four characters in the style of a hard-boiled, '50s American film noir. Cruz will be joined by Blanca Portillo, Lluis Homar and Jose Luis Gomez as the four characters. It's currently shooting in Madrid and the Canary Islands and will most likely hit theaters sometime in 2009.
This will mark Almodovar's 10th collaboration with Sony Pictures Classics. Every one should know that I'm not a big fan of SPC, since they don't know how to handle potential hits, but that's not important for Broken Embraces. Unfortunately I didn't see Volver when it had all the Oscar buzz, but I'm definitely open to checking it out if enough people tell me that it's good. Almodovar and Cruz seem like a killer combination that can create great films, so I'm definitely interested in keeping an eye on Broken Embraces and will be curious to see whether it turns out as good as Volver. I'm always up for more noir too, so bring it on!

Yeah, SPC really does suck. I just saw FROZEN RIVER, how could they NOT expand it? Same goes for First Look on TRANSSIBERIAN.
