Great Short Films - Sam Taylor-Wood's Love You More
September 4, 2008
by Alex Billington
It was the first night of Telluride and I decided to catch a screening of a film called Kisses. Right on time the lights dimmed, and without an introduction the film started. But after about 2 minutes, it seemed clear that this wasn't Kisses. Did I go to the wrong movie? Did they put in the wrong reel? Eventually I realized it was the short that preceded Kisses, titled Love You More, but instead of loathing every minute, I ended up loving every minute. Love You More is a 15 minute short film directed by Sam Taylor-Wood about two high school kids in 1978 who end up together while listening to the newly released Buzzcocks single "Love You More". So why am I writing about it? Even after 5 days, it's still one of the most memorable things I saw.
This is probably the very first time I've ever mentioned a short film in FS.net history. And that's because this was such a great little short that I had to write something about it, especially when I discovered that it had an entire website and a short preview online. Not only was it one of my favorite films of Telluride, but I haven't been able to forget it ever since. It does have some rather graphic sex, but it was just a cool little short that I thoroughly enjoyed and there's nothing more to it. I've featured the preview below and a little bit of info afterwards as well. Hopefully everyone will have the chance to see this in its entirety.
After watching this short, I realized that I was familiar with the name of the director, Sam Taylor-Wood, and tried to figure out where I had heard of her previously. After some quick research, I discovered that it's Taylor-Wood who is directing the upcoming John Lennon biopic titled Nowhere Boy that was just announced last week. That film is being written by Matt Greenhalgh, the same guy who wrote the Ian Curtis biopic Control from last year. Control was also directed by a visual-artist-turned-director named Anton Corbijn, and now Taylor-Wood is following the same path. I can definitely say that I'm excited to see what she'll do with John Lennon and The Beatles, considering this was such an enjoyable short film that certainly showed her capabilities as a director, albeit within just 15 minutes.
Love You More is the second film from visual artist Sam Taylor-Wood, known for her contemporary photography and video. The script was written by Patrick Marber, of Closer and Notes on a Scandal previously. This short first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has been playing at numerous film festivals around the world. We expect it to debut online once it finishes touring.
