Big Screen Blue Man Group Musical Coming to IMAX 3D
September 9, 2008
by Alex Billington
There are really only a handful of musicians that I'd actually ever want to see in theaters - U2 is one of them, as is Coldplay. Blue Man Group is another. Earlier this year we had U2 3D in IMAX, now we're getting Blue Man Group 3D. Producer Charlotte Huggins, who brought us Journey to the Center of the Earth this summer, is partnering with the Blue Man Group to develop a musical that will premiere in IMAX 3D in 2010. While exact details about the production are being kept a secret, original Blue Man creator Matt Goldman says that "it's going to have a story, believe it or not. It's going to have real science content, and we're excited about being in the neuroscience space." They're currently looking for a director who can actually tell a story and shoot comedy, all in 3D. Sounds trippy…
I was initially excited about this, considering Blue Man Group is one hell of an experience, whether on stage in New York or Las Vegas or on tour performing as a band. This statement from Goldman, however, makes me a bit worried. "We had a lot of ideas of things coming at you, splashing of paint, explosions of color," Goldman said. "It's a complete mesh of everything that we love." And Huggins adds more too that worries me. "Doing something fun and engaging with an audience with a base in science is incredibly appealing to the IMAX exhibitors." I've voiced my complaints about 3D before, including referencing a great article written by Roger Ebert, and these two statements are exactly what I don't like about 3D. Now I'm torn - I love Blue Man Group but hate cheap 3D tricks. I hope this doesn't let me down.
Blue Man Group has been performing on stage since 1991. The original three creators, Matt Goldman, Chris Wink and Phil Stanton, will star in this musical. From what I can tell, it'll be a full on feature film with musical performances and all of that brilliant Blue Man shenanigans that we all love. Considering I actually really enjoyed U2 3D, I'm expecting to probably end up like Blue Man Group 3D as well, despite my disdain for 3D. For some odd reason I feel like this is just going to be down-to-earth fun and that's what I enjoy the most. If you haven't seen or heard Blue Man Group, definitely check them out as soon as you can, either on stage or via their two music albums. This film is expected to start shooting next June for release in 2010 - so you've got some time to get acquainted. Any other Blue Man Group fans out there?
