Evil Dead: The Musical Coming to the Big Screen in 3D?!

When will all this 3D news stop?! This is nothing more than a genuine gimmick - I guarantee that. ScreenDaily has posted an interesting article today that mentions that producer Don Carmody is trying to get the cult classic theatrical play Evil Dead: The Musical translated to the big screen in unglorious 3D. As much as I love the Evil Dead movies, this news is absolutely painful to hear about. I missed seeing Evil Dead: The Musical on stage, but I'm not dying to see a gimmicky 3D version on the big screen. It was a genius idea conceived for the stage that featured a "splatter zone" and so much more and it should stay there. As far as I know, this has nothing to do with Sam Raimi's rumored fourth Evil Dead movie anyway.
Apparently the original directors of the stage version, Christopher Bond and Hinton Battle, are already lined up to co-direct the film version and are planning to shoot sometime early next year in Toronto. They plan to shoot with some of the original cast, but rights issues will need to be resolved before they do. I've heard that the play is actually quite good, especially if you're a big Evil Dead fan like me. But as I've said so many times before, 3D gimmicks should stay in amusement parks. There are only a few exceptions where a theatrical play has been perfectly converted to film, but it's rare. And throwing 3D into this instantly proves to me that these guys are all about the gimmick and that's it. I hope you're not excited?

For this I don't think 3D is a gimmick, more of a joke, sort of like how grindhouse had the missing reels as a joke. I mean, c'mon, it's a god damn musical version of Evil Dead, you can't take it serious. This is a good use of 3D because it's a joke.

hey Alex… I AM EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE… cause I am with the others here… this one is supposed to be goofy and gimmicky… and honestly, as you mentioned, probably should be in a theme park, but if I can see it in a theatre.. I am game

WOOHOO… 3D blood spattering out… just had another thought… isn't the splatter zone a gimmick too… so this one lines up with the original intent of the musical anyways… should be fun

Saw the play a couple of weeks ago, just before it closed - fantastic show. Completely hilarious. I liked it a lot better than the Evil Dead movies themselves. It had a much tighter storyline, was much funnier, and of course had tons of great songs. I'd go see a 3D movie version of it maaaany times.

See I heard differently… What I heard is that Sam Raimi, busy with upcoming Spiderman 4 (which will hopefully be much better than the last one) followed by a suggested Spiderman 5, is speaking to the original producers of the Musical and was said to show some interest in the idea. Personally, I wish the play stayed Off-Broadway for awhile, as to the fact it currently is no longer on stage, longer. It was a smash hit, though its reviews were iffy. I think it is a horrible idea. Though a "theater on DVD" wouldn't be such a bad idea. On the Big Screen? I don't think so…

Gimmick, As I recall that's what they said about Talkies when they first came out. 3D may not be the future but they are starting to perfect the tech and even at NAB and industry shows its starting to catch on. So Alex if your right more power to you, or are you just like those in the 20's.
