Cheech from Cheech and Chong is Directing a Movie?!
September 16, 2008
by Alex Billington
We just wrote about Ben Affleck directing his second movie, which remarkably is a good thing, but who would've ever thought that Cheech Marin from Cheech & Chong fame would ever direct?! Marin wrote and will direct and star in a dramedy titled Angel of Oxnard. The story is about Angel Mejias, the voice of Oxnard's version of the Home Shopping Network, who finds himself in the middle of a worldwide media storm when his face appears on a tortilla. Marin has actually directed twice before, specifically two late 80's Cheech & Chong movies titled Get Out of My Room and Born in East L.A. I'm wondering whether this is inspired by immense interest in the comedy tour that the two recently embarked upon?
"It was a real pleasure to have worked with Cheech on our movie The Perfect Game," producer David Salzberg said. "Once he showed us the Angel of Oxnard script, we immediately knew it was a project that we wanted to produce." Cheech actually wrote the scripts for most of the Cheech & Chong movies anyway, so he's not that inexperienced. I'm certain Angel of Oxnard is going to be marketed as the comeback for Cheech (and maybe Chong?), especially because their comedy tour "Light It Up America" seems to be getting some great buzz. The film potentially sounds like it could be good, although somewhat similar to Henry Poole Is Here, but I'll wait until I see more. Anyone want to "light it up" with Cheech too?

I read Angel of Oxnard about 6 years ago. It's been circling around for some time. It's cute but a very mediocre script…….
