Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and McConaughey in Brilliance?

Even though he was out-and-out wrong claiming insight into the villains that might headline a new installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman universe, I think Michael Caine maybe-might-almost be correct when he recently told MTV that Scarlett Johansson and hard-body McConaughey will star alongside him in a "heist adventure film." And that film might be Brilliance, directed by music video maven Samuel Bayer. If you recall, it was pretty widely reported last year that Bayer and ScarJo were reportedly behind the new film. At the time, Bayer told MTV, "it's called Brilliance and it's about diamond thieves, and we start shooting this winter." That winter has come and gone, and no Brilliance in sight.
So what is there to make of Caine's comment that he'll next "probably do a film with Scarlett Johansson… I forget what it's called… It's an adventure film… I was told yesterday that they have Matthew McConaughey as the guy." While Caine could very well be right this time, I can't say I particularly care. Don't get me wrong, I love the old guy, but does anyone recall the 2007 diamond heist film he starred in alongside Demi Moore called Flawless? It was pretty dull. So if Caine is really doing another film on the same subject matter, why should anyone's interest be piqued. Is there any story out there that might be good?
So, Johansson ain't bad, and I'm definitely looking forward to her in Frank Miller's forthcoming The Spirit. But beach-bum McConaughey should completely bury anyone's interest in hoping this film sees the light of day. Stewie put it best when he said "[he] sucks donkey ass." So maybe this is just another case of Caine misfiring, which would be a relief, but I'm not entirely sure how much truth to this story there is.

I thoroughly enjoyed Flawless and thought it was a much better heist movie then The Bank Job which got all the attention. I'd say it was one of my favorite movies of 2007.
Anyone else enjoy Flawless as much as I did?

I thought the ending was a great twist, and I liked how the "heist" was about so much more than simply money. It reminded me of Inside Job, but with a much lower budget. I was also on a Michael Caine high during that season due to Children of Men so that may have heightened my interest in the film. I enjoyed how it stayed in tune with the time period, the set pieces, costumes, and dialogue were spot on for that era and really helped give an insight into the politics involved with dealing diamonds back then. It may have been missing some of the action which we've grown to expect in a heist film, but for a drama I really thought the dialogue between Caine and Moore was insightful into human nature; whether that be greed, envy, love, politics, loneliness, ambition, or even inspiration. Every action they took really helped illustrate them as a character for me and I found myself relating to them quite often.
I gotta say though that my number one reason for liking that film was Michael Caine so I'll have to watch it again tonight and see if that resonates still (though now I'm on a Dark Knight high so I'll probably still love it!)
You mind stating some of the issues you had with it? The numbers speak for themselves and show that I'm in the minority in my opinion so I'm curious as to what I missed that gave the film such a limited release along with poor reviews.

I LOVED FLAWLESS, but THE BANK JOB took all the hype.
I found FLAWLESS to be very intriguing and agree with #4 about the dialogue. The twist at the end was great and enjoyed seeing Caine and Moore go after it. If you haven't seen it, please rent FLAWLESS! It is very good.
