Early Rumor: George Clooney Interested in The Lone Ranger?!

Yesterday evening we brought you the rather exciting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming reboot of The Lone Ranger. This was revealed at a massive presentation that Disney held all day in Hollywood, and the finale that featured a live marching band was for The Lone Ranger. That kind of emphasis obviously shows that they're expecting this to be a huge movie. But two big questions still remain. Who would actually play the Lone Ranger if Depp was to play Tonto? And who would direct such a high concept film? While neither of these have been answered officially by Disney, a fresh new rumor has hit courtesy of AICN that answers one of the questions: George Clooney.
AICN's Merrick reports that a scoop was sent to them from a trusted source. "Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger, and the studio's been talking to him about it." Wow. How does that sound? The Lone Ranger from producer Jerry Bruckheimer starring George Clooney and Johnny Depp. I really like the sound of that. I said when this project was originally announced that "Although I am confident that Jerry Bruckheimer and his team could bring back The Lone Ranger successfully, I'm not fully convinced that it's going to be anything that I'll enjoy yet… Their interpretation will have to be modernized immensely to work well." And it's this kind of news about Depp and Clooney that actually makes me feel a bit more confident in the return of The Lone Ranger. Thoughts?

Aren't we a bit tired of Clooney? Honestly, let's get some new talent. Clooney's time has passed.

@ vegeta, obviously lot of people are not a bit tired of Clooney. If you can't stand him, stay away from his films or news about him. And let others enjoy his work!

I think this choice is a good one. If Depp is Tonto then we know that that will obviously be played well and worth the viewing alone. Clooney as the Ranger though - I'm about 50/50 on this. He's very talented but who knows if he can pull this off.

Sounds like a good combo. Lone Ranger always did seem like a bit of a stick in the mud to me. Clooney can pull those roles off with no problem.
I missed the story about Depp on Wednesday. You know, for a guy who gets as much artistic cred as he does, Depp sure does seem to like working with that hack Jerry Bruckheimer a lot. That guy puts out more crap than a porta-potty!

But when I say 'Clooney's time has passed", I'm not just taking issue with his popularity, but his age as well. Sure Clooney would be able to pull off the gun-wielding and his trademark smart-talk, but at this point a younger actor may be a plus. Of course, that really rests upon the director's vision of the character, which none of us know at this time.

There's no way any of this is real, unless it's an animated movie and Clooney and Deep are lending their voices. Clooney as the Lone Ranger? Ha! We all remember the last time he played a masked man … Batman and Robin. Worst movie ever!
