Rachel McAdams Discovered by Sherlock Holmes
September 25, 2008
by Alex Billington
Another casting announcement today and a few new details for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. The adorable Rachel McAdams has joined the film as the romantic love interest, named Irene Adler. The character actually appeared in only one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in 1891 titled "A Scandal in Bohemia," which in essence justifies her addition to Ritchie's film. Additionally, the Hollywood Reporter confirms that Mark Strong from the upcoming RocknRolla will play the main villain named Blackwood, which debunks the rumor that Russell Crowe was going to play Holmes' nemesis Dr. Moriarty.
The movie, which begins shooting next month, is based on a forthcoming comic book that producer Lionel Wigram wrote as a selling tool for a new take on the classic character. The concept sees Holmes as "a more adventurous and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations and mines more obscure character traits." Everyone already knows I'm looking forward to this and the addition of McAdams only sweetens the deal. Of course we all knew this was going to feature a love interest, even if Sherlock Holmes purists felt that he was better suited as a bachelor. It's nothing to be concerned with - Guy Ritchie's take on this will still be great!

The more I hear about this movie, the more excited I get. It sounds like it could be a winner, as long as they don't stray TOO far from Sir ACD's original character. Sherlock Holmes isn't James Bond.
Also, it's quite possible for Sherlock Holmes to remain a bachelor AND have a love interest. Maybe Holmes and Adler can have a sort of "Bond/Miss Moneypenny" kind of relationship (or even better - a "Han Solo/Princess Leia" relationship) where you know they both want each other, but neither will relinquish the upper hand by actually admitting it.

In Ritchie we trust! Rachel is a nice touch, her looks I think may detour from her great ability to act. She gets overlooked. Very refreashing. What a cast!
