John Grisham's The Partner Headed For the Big Screen
September 30, 2008
by Alex Billington
Screenwriter Ann Peacock (of The Chronicles of Narnia, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, and Nights in Rodanthe previously) has been tapped to adapt the 1997 John Grisham novel The Partner. Oscar winning producer Bobby Chartoff will produce the project along with Lynn Hendee of Chartoff Prods. and Grant Turck and Mark Bethea for newcomer Velocity Management. The book centers on a disillusioned lawyer who steals $90 million from his law firm, stages his own death and successfully disappears for several years. What at first seems to be a brilliant white-collar crime is further complicated by a murder charge. As long as this picks up a very capable director and an exciting cast, this should be a film to keep our eye on in the next year. There can never be enough Grisham!
Even though I'm not specifically familiar with the book, I think the story alone has me interested. I love these kind of mysteries and crime capers that involve intricate plots and heists. Reviews on Amazon saying the following about the book. "I thoroughly enjoyed the intricacies and twists in Patrick Lanigan's master plot to rip off his crooked law firm of enough money to be set for life. As someone who had gotten tired of Grisham's plot technique of using a super-powerful all-knowing company or firm who could track our hero to the ends of the earth and ruin in his life, this was a refreshing change." Peacock seems like a good enough screenwriter as well. We'll let you know who they end up getting for the director and the cast.

I read this years ago. Entertaining and it has a surprising ending, which I hope is retained.

You mean it might be good if they get a very capable director and an exciting cast. Alex your a genious, why the hell does no one reiterate the fucking obvious like you do.Seriously, pick a side and run with it, its not gonna kill you.
Oh wow, a suprise ending. Yea thats what I'm talking about. I mean no one does suprise endings in films anymore. Seriously the suprise ending hasn't become a massive cliche. I am really down for suprise ending, yay. Sorry #1 just had to go there.

THe book is outstanding. My favorite Grisham book by far. If they get good director and cast it'll be the best Grisham movie too

Awesome! I just hope the book doesn't get too butchered in it's big screen translation! And I certainly hope that Fox steers clear from releasing it! I was wondering how long ’til we'd see another John Grisham adaptation hit the big screen! I can't wait!

I read this book. It's one of Grisham's better reads. While i was reading it, I always saw Kevin Spacey in my mind's eye.

I don't think I've ever commented on this site before but I had to for this article. I've read at least 12 John Grisham novels and this is by far my favorite. First read was over 10 years ago and since then I've re-read it twice. I'm curious to see how this plays as a movie because there is a lot of inner dialogue. Highly, Highly recommend the book to hold you over until the movie comes out.

I have been waiting for this one. MY favorite one by far. The first page grabs you and then its five in the morning and you're still turning pages.
I wish Robert Downey, Jr. for the lead, but we'll see.

Not only the book is great, but the sheer idea of getting disappeared, leaving everything behind, is very exciting. The advantage of the book is that even when it ends it compels us to think about it, as to what really happened to Lanigan, did he ever found his love back, and why did Eva leave him. The book had been a marvellous experience for me.

Well, I haven't read any books for quite a while now but when I eventually had free time, I was encouraged to read the book sometime last week and thought..oh well what the heck! but it is so true…the book is damn CAPTIVATING!!! especially the ending! I was reading and thinking "this is soo good to be true" admiring Patrick's great mind and luck to say the least until I got to the ending….WOW! Can't stop thinking what the hell happened to Eva??? the bucks? Lanigan? love? the suspense is but the least to say…absolutely awesome!!!

Just read this for the first time, as I begin to take on most of Grisham's books. I've only so far read this, The Firm, and The Street Lawyer, with this one being the best by a mile. If only Tim Robbins was about 10 years younger, he could definitely pull off the Lanigan character.

I agree with Mike. I read this book and feel in love with it about ten years ago, and am excited to learn that it could go to film. If Tim Robbins were ten years younger he would be excellent for the part. It has to be a credible artist that would be able pull off this character. I love the idea of it!
