Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro Working Together Again!

Paramount Pictures has hired veteran screenwriter Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List, Hannibal, Gangs of New York, American Gangster) to adapt Charles Brandt's book "I Heard You Paint Houses" for none other than Martin Scorsese to direct. On top of that good news, Robert De Niro has already signed on to play Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a reputed criminal who has carried out more than 25 mob murders. The story follows the mob assassin who many believe was involved in the death of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. Confused about the title? I Heard You Paint Houses refers to the mob slang for contract killings, and the resulting blood splatter on walls and floors. Sounds like a delicious mob thriller to me!
We've written about Scorsese's immensely busy future before, but this sounds like one of the better choices. The last time Scorsese and De Niro worked together was on Casino in 1995 and Goodfellas before that. If this project is even remotely as good as either of those, then this definitely needs to be one of Scorsese's next projects. Author Charles Brandt actually befriended the real life Frank Sheeran before his death in 2003. And if that kind of real life crime drama doesn't make you interested, then I don't know what else would? As for the book, its received plenty of praise. "Unlike similar claims by other self-confessed executioners, law enforcement authorities say Sheeran may well be telling the truth."
We actually wrote about Scorsese and De Niro teaming up on a different project back in June of last year, titled The Winter of Frankie Machine, but it seems that project has switched directors recently. It looks like Michael Mann might be directing Frankie Machine with De Niro still attached as Frankie.

It's good to see Marty working with DeNiro again. I've been getting concerned that he had discarded Bobby for Leonardo DiCaprio permanently. As much as I like The Departed, The Aviator was only good instead of great, and Gangs of New York was an outright disappointment. I'm optimistic that Shutter Island will improve on the Scorsese/DiCaprio track record; but it's still welcome news to have a new Scorsese/DiNiro film in the works.

I also didn't care for Gangs of New York, or even The Aviator as a matter of fact…This sounds intriguing though and since I love Casino and Goodfellas I'm anxious to see what Bobby and Marty might cook up this time…hopefully it won't be anything like Righteous Kill because that was awful. I think that may have been due to Pacino's falling career, but Deniro's is still going strong if you ask me. I heard awhile back he had a film coming out with Bruce Willis about the inner working of the Hollywood business, but I haven't seen any marketing for it at all so I'm curious what happened to that…I believe it was called "What Just Happened". Anyone know what just happened to it?

Good for both of them! They are the elite! I'm sure whatever they concoct, it will kick ass!

Half you people are crazy, Gangs of NY was very good, The Aviator was Extremely good!! But I knew it was just a matter of time before De Niro and Scorsese got back together again. I am happy this is the book that's going to do it to, this sounds like a great story to bring that back into old form.
Oh, by the way, did I mention that Martin Scorsese is my favorite filmmaker of all time? - he does make the best movies. Even if the Academy Awards don't agree with ALL of them.

Gangs of New York, Aviator and Departed i would rank as Scorsese's worst films.
