Anne Hathaway Stumbles into Burton's Alice in Wonderland
October 7, 2008
by Alex Billington
In a rather surprising casting announcment, Anne Hathaway has joined Tim Burton's currently in-production hybrid reboot of Disney's classic tale Alice in Wonderland. Wait, what?! Additionally, in a rather unsurprising casting announcement, Burton's wife Helena Bonham Carter will also star in the film alongside of Hathaway. We know that beautiful young actress Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice, Johnny Depp is playing the Mad Hatter, and now Hathaway will play the White Queen while Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen. This pretty much rounds out the cast for the film, which will also feature appearances by Matt Lucas, Michael Sheen, and Christopher Lee in currently unnamed roles.
For those who may be unfamiliar with the project, Tim Burton's take on the classic Disney tale will be a hybrid film featuring both live-action and CGI characters, much like a twisted combination of Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alvin and the Chipmunks. The White Queen (Hathaway) is the sister to the evil Red Queen (Carter), who is known for saying "off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to find and kill a creature known as the Bandersnatch. I've seen some early concept art of the two queens and let's just say - you definitely won't have been able to imagine anything like them.

Helena ruled in Sweeney Todd. She is one of my favorite actors.

I recall Matt Lucas mentioning he was playing Tweedle Dum/Tweedle Dee during a chat show interview - which, if you've seen the comedian, fits somewhat.

Michael Sheen is almost definitely becoming The Cheshire Cat and (as said) Matt Lucas is Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum.
Would be amusing to see Christopher Lee as The Queen of Hearts.

I get the feeling Lee could be The Caterpillar…

Tim Burton is seriously losing his zazz, I mean its ok to reuse actors, Kevin Smith has gotten away with it and so has Judd Apatow, but c'mon, seriously? Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter AGAIN? Give me a fucking break, they were like in his last 5 movies as the main attractions!

I don't have a problem with a director having a company of actors that he turns to on a regular basis, especially when they are as good as the names mentioned.
In any case, he hasn't worked with Hathaway or Wasikowska before, nor the rumoured Lucas and Sheen (I think). So that's some new faces there. Have faith!

This is not a remake of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton is basing this film off the original Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass books by Lewis Carrol, which is different than the one Disney made.

It's more likely that Christopher Lee is taking the role of Bill the Lizard than the Queen of Hearts (assuming she actually had a heart of her own). Steven Fry (another brit) is taking the role of the chesiere cat according to wikipedia.
Am i right to believe that this movie is made by 20th Century Fox studios?

I think Tim trusted his actors…and that they really fit in this kind of movies…and if changing the actors who you think would fit…I think none except the actors that Tim chose. I think fans of Tim's movies don't have any problems with the actors.
