Small Man Tom Thumb Headed to the Big Screen
October 7, 2008
by Alex Billington
Warner Brothers has announced they'll be developing a feature version of Tom Thumb, the folklore character first created in 1500s, to be titled just Thumb. While I might normally say this is a forgettable project, it's being directed by Disney helmer Kevin Lima, who brought us Enchanted most recently in addition to Tarzan and 102 Dalmatians. This whimsical fairy tale of a film will be a "fresh take" on the character that plans to explore his origin. Obviously this kind of story will require some sort of CGI to pull it off - and the first film that comes to mind in comparison is Little Man. Considering producer Doug Wick's past credits include Stuart Little, Peter Pan, and RV, that comparison might not actually be too far off.
Although I was familiar with minor details about the character, I wasn't so sure about his background. Some quick research on Wikipedia and I see that he was originally an English folklore character known for being mischievous and who eventually wound up in the castle of King Arthur. He's been involved in various incantations in books throghout the years and showed up in a live-action musical in 1958 and an animated BBC film in 1993. Besides that, I don't have much to say about this. I guess we'll just wait and see what they do with it and if it actually looks any good. And where is Thumbelina in all of this?

Wow what a surprise no comments on this one…I bet if this was a comic book character instead of folklore it would have many more comments.

They already made a film called Tom Thumb which I found to be enjoyable. Tom was played by Russ Tamblyn, famous for his roles in West Side Story and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It was an accurate tale behind the folklore with a little twist here and there. It even won an Oscar for Best Special Effects. Now this is no Transformers mind you it was filmed in 1958, so to make a man about as big as your thumb appear on the screen was absolutley mind boggling. All in all I hope this is a good film and I'm sure it will be.
